Allies and Enemies of the IroquoisAllies and Enemies of the Iroquois

The first contact between Europeans and the Iroquois tribe was in 1535. At that point, the Iroquois had formed the League of Five Nations (which is the oldest Democracy to date).

The Iroquois allied themselves with English interests. They bitterly opposed the extension of French's settlement southward from Canada, and they were responsible for preventing the English colonies from being flanked on the west by the French. At the outbreak of the American Revolution, each tribe was allowed to choose the side that they wanted. Most of the tribes joined the English rather than the Americans (Making them enemies).
