Job Outlook by mnCareers.org: Outlook is good for production careers, although conditions have slowed over the last few years. A slowdown means it can be more difficult to find entry-level positions and competition can be fierce for those openings. When the economy strengthens, the number of opportunities in production will increase.
Changes in technology have a big impact on production jobs. The printing industry is becoming more and more computerized, and this has changed the way presses run and jobs are tracked. Processes are likely to be automated, meaning fewer machine operators are needed. Operators will need to be familiar with multiple machines and have extensive work experience and computer knowledge.
