Job Outlook by mnCareers.org: The outlook is good for mechanics. Many employers say there is a shortage of qualified workers with the necessary skills to do the job. Vehicles have become more complex and contain more electronic and computer components. Engines and brake systems have also changed. Computer skills are becoming more important on the job. Employers also want workers with a background in electronics.
The economy has less of an impact on mechanical workers than others. Automobile and auto body mechanics, for example, are in demand whether the economy is weak or strong. In a strong economy , more people purchase new vehicles. In a weak economy , people try to stretch out the life of their older cars and trucks. Either way, mechanics are needed for maintenance and repairs.
