Transportation

Transportation workers move people or things by road, air, rail or sea. Some workers in this field are responsible for the health and safety rules and regulations. People and things need to be transported 24/7 this means that you may end up working nights, weekends and holidays. Most transportation workers do not work a 9 AM - 5 PM shift. In addition to operating machinery transportation workers are sometimes responsible for inspecting their equipment. You should have some of the following skills:

  • Concentration
  • Accuracy
  • Good Eyesight
  • Communication and Stamina

Job Outlook by mnCareers.org: The outlook is good for transportation overall, although it varies by occupation. Occupations with a larger employment, like truck and bus drivers, have a good outlook. The growing population will increase the future demand for workers as well. Others, like locomotive engineers and air traffic controllers, have fewer openings because of the small number employed in Minnesota.

Transportation, especially air travel, has been hit hard over the past few years. Air travel has decreased significantly since the September 11th terrorist attacks, the war in Iraq and the SARS epidemic. The impact of these events will be felt by the airline industry for some time. Permanent restructuring of the industry has already started.
