Service stars are used
on campaign ribbons only and signify subsequent awards of the same
type. Bronze stars are used for awards 1-4, a silver star signifies
5 bronze stars.. |

Clusters are used on important
awards to signify that the award has been won again.The 2nd through
4th Awards have bronze oak leaf cluster. Silver is used for the
6th-11th awards, or one is used in lieu of 5 bronzes. One silver
could be the 5th or 6th award.

A bronze E is attached
to a ribbon to signify efficieny and marksmanship. |

A bronze M is attached
to a ribbon to signify a reservist was called to active duty when
the award was won. |

A bronze S is attached
to a ribbon to signify a superior rating. |

to a ribbon to signify valor. It is considered one of the highest
awards, and only one can be worn on a ribbon. |

Numbers are used on awards
to signify the ribbon being awarded again. A bronze 1 is never put
on a ribbon alone. |
