BAMBI - Biochemistry and Molecular Biology:

The amazing experience of being able to partake in an experiment in The Australian National University, renowned for its research and experimental facilities, was fantastic enough, let alone it being held in the Bambi building. The Bambi building is the home of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology departments.

On Tuesday 4th January 2005 the biology group, Darwin, a group of 16 students from The National Youth Science Forum 2005, participated in an experiment about deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). The experiment was quite difficult. Having to use apparatus that were not available in secondary schools, the experience was somewhat different.

Dana Sanchez instructed the group on methods to use for the experiments and how to use the equipment properly. Dana also taught us how to do DNA typing using special gels.

After we had finished the DNA experiment, we had the opportunity to meet a research scientist that was working in the Bambi building, Dr. Kevin J. Saliba. Dr. Saliba’s principle research was on the malaria parasite. He informed us about the malaria virus in great detail, showing us how to prepare slides and demonstrating how to use apparatus which he uses in his research.

Darwin was then taken on a tour of the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology building. Bring able to peer in windows and doors; having the unique opportunity to talk to other scientists and professors about the research that they are undertaking. We also had the opportunity to talk to PhD students and ask them about why and how they are going about their experiments and research. It was an extremely beneficial exercise.

The Bambi building was truly amazing. We had the unique opportunity to see and do what was remarkably at our fingertips. By having the opportunity to participate in an experiment, it put all of our talent and skills into action.

Thank you Dana Sanchez and Dr. Kevin Saliba for this memorable experience.
