Her and Dustin had grew close within the past week; in fact, if anyone saw them, they would possibly be classified as a couple. They were seen hand-in -hand just about every place they went, kissed eachother goodbye, and said I love you whenever they left eachother. But what it all meant to Adi, she didn't know.
"Adi, hun, cupcake, c'mere," Tom said as he ate the last of a twinkie and was looking thru some old pictures from Jimmy's stack of Manilla folders. "What do you think about this for the older VonTrap Kiddo-boy?"
"This one?" Adi said as she pointed to a red-skottish kilt.
"Yeah, ya know, wouldn't it fit good?"
Adi scratched her nose. "Um..Tom..this is a kilt"
"Right."
"No...Tom...this is a kiiiilt
"Okaaaaaaaay.." Tom w asn't getting the clue.
"Tom!" Adi exclaimed. "Bagpipe players wear these, ok? This is not suitable for a 17-year old boy in the sound of music!"
Tom laughed as if he knew. "Oh Gosh, Adi," he said, "I guess you know your stuff huh." She slapped her on her butt with a folder. "Keep up the good work."
Tom walked out of the office as Adi rolled her eyes and ran a hand thru her hair. She took a seat on the wodden coffee table and she took a sip of her cappachino. She glanced at her watch. "11:34 a.m."
"Hey busy one over there, "Jimmy said from across the room. "Something bugging ya?"
"Me?"
"Well...you are usually busy...and...your thye only one over there.." He said.
"Uh, sorry," She faked a laugh. "Nothing wrong."
"If I called you a liar would you hit me?
Adi laughed at his wit.
"I was just up alot last night, that's all."
"I hope you weren't worrying about this stuff," He said as he set down a box of old costumes. "It's not worth it."
"Sure it is, but that's not why I was up. I was just thinking about alot of things in general."
"Yeah, but we all have those nights," he said. "But look alive, girl! You aren't the one who got dumped today."
Adi looked at him with a look of surprize. "What?!"
Jimmy chuckeld, shrugged his shoulders and said casually, "Yeah. Dumpee, right here."
"Aren't...aren't you....well, upset?"
"No. No reason to be. She said she loved me. I really didn't love her. I care about her like crazy. But she's moving and I thought to myself....why be upset over something that...you really aren't upset about? She's an awesome girl...she fun and great...but there was no chemistry."
"Well I'm glad you aren't taking it too hard." She said sympathetically. "If I were her, I don't know if I would be taking it so easy."
Jimmy looked at her and felt another akward moment of silence of not knowing what to saym so he looked at his watch. "You hungrey?"
Adi nodded. "A little."
"Oh my God!" Adi laughed. "You did that!?"
"Yeah, it was awesome...till we got back in my truck and we couldn't move. I think that was the most scared I have ever been..I've always been on the cops good side."
Adi and Jimmy were sitting at a local cafe finishing up their lunch and sipping malts. It was a good break, the two got an oppurtunity to share more storyes, which Adi loved, plus getting away from the stress of it all was great as well.
"So did you get it started?"
"Yeah, just in the knick of time, too. Some lady narked on us and we had to drive as fast as we could to keep our ass our of trouble."
Adi shook her head thinking about the incedent.
"I can just picutre my mom if she ever found out I pulled something like that. She would say, "Adriana Rae, you're a lady, so act like one." God knows I wanted to pull the stuff boys got too."
"Adriana Rae," he repeated. "It's a pretty name."
Adi batted her eye lashes. "Well Thanks, I chose it myself," she joked. "And how about you, Mr. Ventura. You have a middle name?"
"Yep," he answerd. "But I don't give it out."
"Ohh, that embarassing, huh?"
He smiled. "Yeah, I guess you could say so."
"Eugene?" She guessed.
"James Eugene Ventura...Now Adi, does that realy sound right?" He kidded.
"I didn't think so." She responded. "C'mon, you can't tell me? Adi Raddison who comes to save the theaters ass at the last minute?"
"Oooh, nice one," He said.
"Well, it was worth a try." She shrugged.
"You know what? You remind me so much of my sister."
She perked up. "Really? Is that bad or.."
"No, A good thing. I barely see her, she's just finishing highschool back in New Jersey. She's got a strong wit."
"Well thanks, I'll take that as a compliment."
"well, you should!"
"Well, ok!"
The two finished up what was left of their food and sat a bit more.
A younge man with a little boy probably around the age of 3 or 4 walked into the cafe where they were sitting. The man was probably in his older 20's, maybe even 30's. Just by looking at the duo, you could tell the two were very good buds. Automatically, Adi knew the man was the younge boy's father. He put a booster seat onto the chair for the boy and lifted him up to sit, and was cheerfully talking to him.
"Hmm," Adi smiled looking at the two. "That's so cute."
"What is?" Jimmy asked.
"Those two other there. Daddy takin 'junior' out for lunch. It's cute."
"Yeah, I suppose it is," Jimmy said taking another drink of his coke.
"It reminds me of me and my dad kinda. Every Sunday night till I was like 8, Me and him would always watch the late football game together. I mean we never missed a game. He would cheer for one team, I would always cheer for the other. I think he was always such a big football fan he didn't care which team won." Jimmy smiled as Adi told her story.
"Well, Anyways, He always said whoever's team won at the end would have to treat the other to something to eat at A&W...ya know...Ice cream or a hamburger or something.... I mean he always said that, but I knew he would always pay for it and let me get whatever I wanted." She looked down fiddling with her straw in her glass. "God, I loved those days."
"Football fan, huh?"
"you betcha...Thanks to my dad anyways." She smiled. "I miss my dad."
"So why don't you call him?"
"I know, I should. It just seems like I have no time. I guess I'm gonna have to just make time from now on. I forgot how much I really miss him." She commented. "Well how about you... you ever do stuff with your dad like that?"
Jimmy sat quiet for a moment. "It was rare."
Adi sense the sensetive subject she might have broughten up. She nodded. "Oh."
As the day grew on, Tom came with his rounds and always brought some kind of junk food for their break. Adi and Tom ate it even though they had a big lunch. They joked and called it "motivational food" to keep them going. More days came and gone, so did the heat of the day. Due to the heat of Jimmy's studio, Adi no longer came to the theater in a work outfit, but in jeans, tank tops, or tee's. The more comfortable she felt, the better she worked. Or maybe that was an excuse, but either way it made the job more enjoyable.
It was July 3rd, and it was the last day they worked before everyone took off for a week, due to the July 4th Holiday Weekend. Jimmy had spent much of the day in his studio running over set props amounts while Adi worked backstage, helping Tom geting all costumes in the right dressing rooms, in more convient spots. She knew that this wasn't part of her job, and Tom told her she didn't need to stay to help. But she wanted too. In all truth, the job kind of grew on her. The people at the theater grew as well. She finally started seeing the humor in Tom. She liked the re-newed friendship she had started with Brady. And she liked Jimmy...she liked just everything about him.
It was about 7:30 that night and Adi and Tom were just finishing up. Jimmy hopped down the stairs from his office, carrying his coat with him and his laptop bag in his other hand when he saw Brady, also heading for the lobby doors.
"Whats up man. Almost done?" Brady asked as he looked back.
"Yeah, ah, Just about." He answered as he looked around the lobby, obviously to see if Adriana was still around. "You leaving?"
"Yeah. I'm gonna head home to my parents House for the weekend."
"Oh, cool."
"Yeah...You still going to Alex's?"
"That wasn't exactly in the break-up agreement."
"Oh well, you can come with me, if ya want. I'm warning ya tho, not very exciting."
"Oh, Thanks Bro but I think I'm just gonna take it easy this weekend, ya know."
Brady nodded."Yeah ok. Well I won't be heading back to the appartment till I come home, so your free to bring insainly huge amounts of women home. She's all yours."
"Ok man." Jimmy laughed. "Whatever. See ya when you get back."
"Yeah, later bro."
Jimmy set his stuff down against a wall in the theater and headed towards the auditorium and went backstage by the dressing rooms where he saw Tom sitting eating a donut.
"Working hard or hardly workin?" he question Tom.
"Both, of course dude."
"Sweet." Jimmy looked around. "Is Adi still here?"
"Oh yeah, I think she's in Greg's Dressing room, putting the costumes in it's places."
Jimmy walked thru the maze-like backstage where the dressing rooms were set up. he peaked his head inside of one of the cast memebers Greg's dressing room where she was hanging the costumes on hangers. Jimmy stuck his head in the door and slightly knocked on the wall.
Adi looked behing her and saw Jimmy and got a big smile on her face.
"Hey there, work-a-holic," Jimmy greeted.
"Hi there," she said. "Working hard or hardly working?"
"Isn't that my line?" He asked.
"Not anymore." She grinned. "What's up?"
Jimmy shrugged. "Nothing... just getting ready to head home."
"Oh, yeah me too. It'll be nice to be off for a week."
"yeah, I think you deserve some time off."
"Well, Not gonna lie, I could use it."
"Yeah," Jimmy nodded as the two stood in the room. For the first time, an awkward silence filled the room and neither could think of what to say.
"Well...Just thought I'd stop and wish ya a good week. Take it easy."
She smiled warmly at his wishes. "Oh...Thanks, that's really sweet of you." She said. "You not going to Alex's or..."
"No..she never told me to come so I guess not."
"Oh," she said. "Well have a good week off anyways."
"Thanks."
More silence.
Adi felt wierd. All of a sudden she felt the urge to give him a hug good-bye, but before she could, he had said "seeya" to her and left the dressing room. And she felt bad... He was sweet and came to see her and she didn't even give him a hug...
I still can! she thought. She bolted out of the dressing room and ran out of backstage.
"Jimmy!" She yelled as she sprinted out to the lobby where here was picking up his coat and laptop.
A little surprized and confused, he answered "...yeah?"
"Ohh," Adi said, not realizing he was so close. Embarrased, she answered, "I...was just wondering if... you were gonna be back here on Monday...to ya know...go over last minutes....details," she made up an excuse to conver her embarassment of her spur of the moment urge.
"Um...yeah I think so," He answered with a confused look on his face."
"Ok..!" She said as she fiddled with the bottom of her shirt. "Just checking."
the two said theire last words to eachother and Adi cringed to herself as she walked back to the backstage area.
What WAS that Adi?? She asked herself. She shook her head. Somethings going on here.
