Background information:

Peter Keating (b. Mar. 1, 1851 - d. Mar. 17, 1930, in Hanover, Manitoba) [fn. 1] and Christina Anderson (b. Jun. 16, 1870), my great-grandmother, were married in Clearsprings (Manitoba) United Church on July 11, 1889 [fn. 2]. They homesteaded a farm in the Clearsprings district (which is near Steinbach), arriving in Manitoba in 1872. The family farm was later worked by their son James Keating, and his son, Allan. The farm was sold following James' death in 1963. Christina Keating died on March 2, 1962, at the age of 91. Peter Keating died, at home, at the age of 79. He is buried in the Clear Springs Cemetery.

Peter Keating was reportedly married previous to his marriage to Christina Anderson.

Christina was an Anderson stepdaughter; her name was in fact Nelson [fn. 3]. Christina's adoptive or step-mother was Anne Anderson, who was born on May 16, 1843, in Los Ventas, Sweden. The date of Anna's death is not known, but she was 85 years old when she died, so her death must have occurred in 1928 or 1929. At her death, she had been resident of Manitoba for 46 years. Anna's husband (name unknown) died in 1920. Christina's half-sister, Beatrice (b. Sep. 14, 1887), married Howard J. Rankin (b. Aug. 11, 1888).

My grandfather, James Spencer (see below), had a brother named Charles H. Spencer, who died on Jan. 16, 1962, and a sister named Nettie. Charles married a woman named Mollie, and they had a son named Ted, who at one time resided in Beaverton, Ontario (my grandfather's birthplace).

James Spencer was born James Craswell (or Creswell) Spencer on March 26, 1891, in Beaverton, Ontario. His father was Charles Humphrey Spencer, who was a farmer, and his mother was Elizabeth Catherine Craswell (or Creswell).

Peter and Christina Keating had the following children. One of their daughters, Christie, was a teacher in the new Clearsprings school in 1919. [fn. 4] The children were:
