August 2, 1999
Early in the morning a protester locks down in the path of construction. Police leave him there, and crews work around him for the time being. A young girl is arrested when she brings the protester some water. She later commented that the arrested officer threw her against the protective barricade inside his squad car, and was getting ready to come at her again when his partner stated over the radio, "Take it easy, you're on camera."
Court hearings for last weeks arrests begin today. Protesters who were charged are granted conditional release, provided they are not caught protesting near the construction site again. A second arrest for protesting the highway promises a charge of contempt of court, bringing a $700 fine and 90 days in jail.
