Father McCarthy is an ordained Melkite rite Catholic priest who has devoted his 30 year ministry to leading world-wide seminars that thoroughly examine the original form of Christianity, namely Jesus= teachings of nonviolent love of friend and enemy, a radical concept that has been de-emphasized by organized Christianity for the last 1700 years.
Fr. McCarthy is in the forefront of that faith movement that is dedicated to the nonviolence so clearly modeled by Jesus of Nazareth. Within the stream of such spiritual peace heroes as the Berrigan brothers, Martin Luther King, Thomas Merton, Dorothy Day, Gandhi, Leo Tolstoy, St. Francis of Assisi, etc. Fr. McCarthy has been instrumental io the planting and nurturance of many organizations such as the Peace Studies program at Notre Dame University, Pax Christ USA, and innumerable small local peace and justice organizations around the world. He has written voluminously on this important subject in a multitude of journals, magazines, newspapers and other print media. Several of his seminars have been recorded on audiotape cassette and will, along with other materials, be available for purchase at the weekend seminar.
This conference is ideal for those Christians, especially laypersons, of all denominations, both lapsed and faithful, who struggle with trying to comprehend the long history of Christian participation in war, homicide, unjust institutions, killing, and dominative power in all its forms, including racism, economic injustice, xenophobia, misogyny, homophobia, capital punishment, militarism, poverty, etc. Fr. McCarthy will lead seminar participants through an orderly examination of the history, spirituality and theology of Christian nonviolence (of the 1st 300 years CE) and will discuss at length the justified violence and holy wars of the current dominant form of Christianity known as Constantinian Christianity.
Many past participants in Fr. McCarthy=s conference have had faith-changing and faith-strengthening transformations and have been energized to go back to their individual congregations, communities and families with this important message. Part of the importance of this conference will be the networking that will be encouraged, the handout materials that will lead to further study, and the music, prayer, and meditation that will be an integral part of the event.
Sara Thomsen, local Duluth singer songwriter and committed peace activist, along with some of her friends, will be centering us during the weekend with their inspiring music.
