Spring Rain

A knock on the door woke Shane from his peaceful slumber. Killing and shattering his web of sweet dreams in one simple sound. “What is it?” He mumbled into his pillow, just loud enough for who ever was on the other side of the door to hear him. He tried to drift back into dream land. “It’s almost two o’ clock get your butt out of bed” His mothers voice boomed from the other side of the thin door. The slur in her voice told him she was already half drunk, and working on the other half.. “I’m working it, kind of,” He rolled over and slipped his feet onto the plush black carpet in his room. “At least I don’t have to listen to you anymore if I wake up,” He laughed to himself. He gathered his thoughts and tried to get his dream back, or more so his thoughts. He wanted to kill his parents and leave the back woods town that had stuck him in. To leave the town that was eating him whole. No one could forget the fact that the town had a way of making people stay. Shane himself had seen it happen. A senior would graduate from High School then not go on to collage. Instead they would stay home and make more babies and become white trash just like the rest of the town. t was a cycle his parents were part of and he wasn’t going to be the next in line. His head and neck hurt from sleeping wrong last night, probably from a nightmare that lingered on the fringes of his brain. Stretching his arms out to the side and arching his back he looked like some half naked superficial god. Just as he closed his eyes and yawned another knock at his door, yet again breaking the peace of his room. “Don’t forget about your friend today” It was his drunk mother again. Couldn’t she just leave him alone? If by some unseen force of nature took hold, someone was knocking on his bedroom window. Shane’s first reaction was to naturally walk over to the window to see who it was. Strangely enough it was the very friend his mother was talking about. “Hey, I was just thinking about you man” Shane said as he pushed the window open with one hand and some dreadlocks out of his face with the other. His friend Post just smiled a bit. He was never one for talking to much. He would rather express himself in written word, art or in his music. “It’s hard to believe it’s been five year Post,” Shane’s left had wrapped around the neck of his black bass guitar. Both Shane and Post played bass in the same band. The sounds the two made come from the instruments was amazing, and were unrivaled in town. Post cocked his head to the side in a bird-like manner and shrugged his shoulders. As he did so the skies opened up and let lose a light spring shower. “You want to come inside Post?” Shane softly asked when he noticed Post was getting soaked. Post only shook his head no. As he did something fell from his hair. Shane didn’t notice anything he was to busy taking in the sight of Post standing in his window soaked, smelling of boy and rain. He had always had a little crush on Post. There was just something about the boy that made him feel so much for him. Maybe it was his jet black shoulder length hair, or his ice blue eyes that always sparkled when he was with him. His eyes fell on a trail of red dripping down from behind Post’s ear cutting through the rain that was following the same path. Shane knew it was time. Post lifted his had as if to wave good-bye. From somewhere deep within the house a clock chimed out three o’ clock. Post turned to leave his spot in front of the window. As he did the hole in the back of his head became visible to Shane as it had four other times before this. The hole wasn’t full of gore as it had been when they found him, but it was still there. Post only took a few more steps away from the window before he vanished out of sight. “Good-bye friend” he said with a sigh as a few tears found their way down his cheeks, mixing with the rain that was splashing on his face.
