DEER CAMP CLASSIC MOMENTS

All time classic moments in deer camp history.

You took my pop!

Donny and Charley had been deer hunting for a couple of years, but this year would be unlike anything they had ever expected. We had noticed Sonnenberg and his crew were moving in on our territory, so we were less than thrilled when we saw them walking up and down the trails and taking deer out of our hunting area. Charley and Donny were so protective of our hunting area, they decided the next time they saw someone suspicious they were gonna do something about it!

Well one fine, quiet hunting morning when the snow was white, and the sun was shining, Donny and Charley had just gotten back from taking a break and were headed back towards their stands from the "Y". Donny was so confident because of the seclusion and remoteness, and the number of our hunters in the area, that there would be no problem leaving his blaze orange hunting sack in his stand. He thought it would be just fine. So as they walked back to Donny's stand they passed a stranger, nodded and said "hello", otherwise pretty much saying nothing. They asked each other "Who was that?!" thinking it was some kid from saunenbergs walking up the trails invading our area. Because the kid seemed nice enough they decided to let it go and head back to Donny's stand.

When they got back to Donny's stand they noticed strange foot prints all around their stands and upon further detective work, they realized that the footprint treads from either of their boots did not match those in the snow! They figured they were this kid's footprints and had been snooping around his stand! Thinking alike, anger began to heat up in the two twin brothers. Donny climbed up to his stand only to be further shocked. Some one had been digging through his sack and drank his pop and ate his candy and half of his sandwich!! This was the last straw!!! The twins with their great minds thinking alike discovered this evil thief's plot. Annoyed by this foolish kids theivery, they decided they were going to go confront him, so they began their trek back to the "Y". As they were walking back to the "Y" they noticed the stranger had took a trail and headed out into the feild to sit in one of stands from Ole's Fallout Shelter's crew! They saw blaze orange in the stand. They were mad as hell and weren't going to take it anymore! They were going to stand their ground and protect our hunting area from these jerks. They thought, "man this is the second stand this guy is going to go up in that isn't his! First yours Donny, now Ole's stand!!"

So very angered by this strangers ignorance and failure to acknowledge the fact that there were people who already hunted in the parts, Donny and Charley screamed out to the stranger demanding that he return to the trail and get down from the stand. Donny and Charley figured, if this guy tries any thing there are two of them and only one of him, and that they were going to make everyone proud by standing up for our territory. Annoyed, the stranger climbed down from the stand, and trotted back to the trail. He said "what's your guys problems? Why are you guys yelling across the field for? I'm trying to deer hunt here!" Donny and Charley said "What are you doing going up in other peoples stands?! We got a bunch of people hunting in these woods! You went up in my stand! You stole my pop!" The stanger responded kind of clueless "No I didn't! What are you guys talking about?!" Donny and Charley replied with a detectives response giving this stranger the 3rd degree "We saw your footprints, let's see the bottom of your boot!!" The stranger answered back "What???" Donny and Charley responded "We've been coming up here for years!" The stranger replied "So have I!" Donny and Charley responded "Our family has been coming up here for 20 odd years!" The stranger replied "So have mine!"

Donny and Charley began to worry, feeling a knot in their stomachs. "Where is your cabin?" The stanger replied the red cabin just past the trail." Donny and Charley felt terror over coming their body's at the huge mistake they just had made and how big of trouble they were going to be in and how big of asses they just had made of theirselfs, and how much embarrasment they had cause their dad! "You mean Ole's?" The stranger replied "Yeah, that's the one." Donny and Charley replied, "You're Stevie aren't you?" "Yeah" "OH no! We're so sorry, oh man we're sorry, we didn't know you were with those guys, we thought you were someone else! There have been guys invading our area, we didn't know it was you. Sorry man, oh man, we're stupid. We're so stupid. Man we're sorry." Very embarrased Donny and Charley knew they had F'd up. They said "We'll let you get back to your hunting." and they trotted back to their stands with their heads down, knowing that Stevie was going to mention something to his dad, Dave.

Donny asked Charley "If it wasn't Stevie snooping up in my stand who was it?" They later learned that it was their brother Jason playing a little trick on Donny and teaching him a lesson not to leave his backpack in his stand, because a stranger could have done it! Donny and Charley were very scared and reluctant to tell anyone because they knew they would never live it down. The story got back to everyone, and the embarrasement lives on today. The incident became known as "YOU TOOK MY POP!" They blamed the incident on Jason because if he had not done his little prank, none of that would have happened. Funny it may seem to those who hear about it, horrifying for those who lived it! All the poor kids were trying to do was do good and protect the area, and in the end they make fools of themselves.

Wait 'til Charley comes out with the big one!

Donny and Charley hadn't had the best of luck since they started deer hunting four years ago. They hadn't even seen a deer in the woods, let alone had the chance to shoot one. So Dave decided it was time for these guys to get a deer. He put Donny in Kevin's stand, and Charley in "The Secret Weapon" stand, which no one knows the location of except for Dave, Charley and a select few.

It was the Friday after opener when the action began. Larry had bagged a spiker at 9am that morning, and Donny shot a nice doe a couple hours later thanks to Dave's Professional Guiding Service. It was early afternoon by the time we got both deer down to da' meat pole to weigh 'em in. Larry's spiker took the lead at 122 pounds, but Dave said, "Oh yeah, Larry? You think you got the lead, but just wait 'til Charley comes out with the big one." We heard some shooting at 3:45pm and wondered if it could have been Charley. Now that Donny finally got his first deer, we were really hoping Charley would get his. We were in suspense waiting for everyone to come out of the woods and see who was doing all the shooting.

The first four wheeler comes out from the trail with Dave and Jack on it. Jack points behind him and tells us to check out his deer on the next machine coming out. We look and see a four wheeler coming our way with a beautiful buck strapped on the front rack, and Charley driving the machine. We all told Jack, "Nice deer!", and that's when Charley told us that it was his! He really did come out with the big one! We weighed it on da' meat pole after much congratulating and celebrating. His ten point buck weighed in at 155 pounds and put Charley down in the books as the first one to go on the Ole's Fallout Shelter Big Buck Contest Plaque.
