Rant for the Week of August 4 - August 11

A couple of months back, both my mother and father decided that it was time to get a computer for themselves. They are separated and so they each bought one. Ever since they did, they haven't stopped coming to me with their problems with it.

This just proves the point that I'm going to try and make in this rant, and that is: ADULTS DON'T KNOW JACK ABOUT COMPUTERS! They don't! Now, obviously there are some exceptions in that adults have to use computers for work, and stuff like that and so they're good at them, but the average adult, the ones that work construction, or that are retired, or that just don't have a job that requires a complex PC, don't know jack.

I'll give you three amusing acedotes, one from each parent and then one from my sister just because it's funny and she doesn't have a clue what she's doing. These stories are just so everyone knows just what exactly I'm dealing with now. I'll start with my father.

My father bought a pretty cheap computer with a really expensive monitor. In fact, his monitor was almost twice what his comp was. He got the whole set up, the 20 inch montior, the 400 mhz comp, the most advanced printer, a scanner, and a neat little mouse pad. Now, sure that sounds awesome, and I agree with you it is. The thing is, he only bought the computer mostly just for e-mail and the internet. That's not the story though. I was only making everyone see just what type of set up we're working with. I'll tell you know, he bought all of this with NO knowledge of how to run a PC and NO knowledge of windows at all. These are some of the problems I've had to deal with since I put the thing together: 1) Had to explain to him and friend how to scan pictures. 2) Downloaded Viruses from e-mail. 3) Had to show how to e-mail. 4) Had to show how to use internet and explain what the "address bar" was. 5) Had to explain how to download 6)Had to explain how to copy and paste. I think that's enough for now. So, what do you think people? Should he be able to have a computer? Should I have to explain such things? You tell me.

Now for my mother. Ahhhhh, yes my wonderful mother. I only have one story from her and I think it's all I need to prove my point. My mother was having troubles with her printer. It would only print the backgroud stuff, like links and such if it was from the internet and such. So, she was going to bring in her comp to see if it was a software problem and was disconnecting the wires from the back. Now, that's easy enough. I think anyone can do this. Well, she gets to the connection that's from the monitor and tries to pull it out but with no success. So, she tries to pull harder and harder until the WHOLE thing, including the part that was attached to the computer that you plug the monitor into. What was her mistake you may be asking? She didn't know that it was screwed in. I think I've made my point.

Now for my sister's story. I saved this one for last because it's just the dumbest out of all of them. I laughed so hard at this that I almost fell to the ground. After I was done laughing I had a migrane from her stupidity waves that were just radiating from her. Now, my sister is 22 and actually goes to college. She was visiting my father one time and I was going out with the two and we all met at my father's house. Now, my sister was on the computer while my father was getting ready. I talked to her for a minute or two and then she asked me why the Yahoo! page she wanted to see wasn't coming up. She told me she had put in the address about 5 minutes before and it still hadn't come up. So, I walked around the desk, look at the address bar, saw that it was correct, then looked at the bottom of the screen and saw her problem. So, I minimized the screen and connected her to the internet. I'm holding the contension that I'm adopted.

I've proved my point over and over again. Or, should I say, my parents have proved it for me. But they're not the only reason I hold this theory. All the time I hear of parents and adults that don't know this, or don't know that. They're easy problems as well and if they just thought about it for a minute, they're surely going to get it. I did. I know everything I know just from teaching myself. I still hear stories from other people telling me how their mother gets freaked about upgrading because it will crash the system, or the parents don't want any downloads because there could be a virus, and such stuff. Stupid stupid stupid.

I want to make sure that I'm not speaking out of terms, so if you have any amusing stories about how dumb your parents, or adult neighbors or anyone, are with computers, e-mail them to me and I'll post them. Hell, if you just have a story that deals with someone, or yourself, being stupid, e-mail them as well. I'd love to read them and I'm sure everyone else would too. Til next time! Same Daddy time, same Daddy page!
