The Encounter- Epilogue

By Mallard

Well, folks, I, Aaron Homden, the world’s greatest fisher, was about to prove his luck at the pond. As he strode down to Lake Hylia, I scoffed. “HA!” Zelda glared and sniffed. “What?” I chuckled. “Well, Zelda, it happens that I happen to be the greatest happenstanceing fisher in the world.” I said. Link coughed. The Sages all rolled their eyes at the invention of a new word. Hey, catchy, right? Anyhow, Sages, Hero, Princess and Protector, that was us, the victory party. We knew tons of ‘em were going on. Ours was the best though. Heh. But then I started to get into my thinking mode. I sighed. Something hadn’t been right with Zelda lately. She had been acting.....strange. I thought of Ganon. He knew something I didn’t, as did Zelda. I thought of the glove again. Blasted glove. It was sure odd. Zelda looked at me. Her eyes....her eyes betrayed fear. I didn’t know why, but in a sense, I did. We were now at the fishing pond door. I kicked it open. “Fishing rods please thanks okataya let’s fish,” I said, using one of my favorite expressions. ‘Okataya’. What a wonderful phrase. The fisherman glared. “YOU NEED TO PAY FOR THAT!” he shouted. He gasped as an orange rupee clunked him on the head. I shouted to the others. “Don’t pay. I have everything we ever need right here.” I said, patting a pouch. Zelda gasped mockingly. “Aaron! How dare you!” she giggled, looking inside of it.. “Hey hey hey! That’s about ten thousand dolla-er, rupees!” I said. Everyone stopped short. The fisherman slumped over his desk in a stupor. “Been drinking,” said Saria sarcastically. Everyone laughed. I looked into Saria’s eyes, then into Zelda’s. I suddenly noticed they had the same look of fear on their face.

Zelda was being taught how to cast by Link. Link was a pretty good fisherman, having a pretty good teacher, eh? Heh heh. Just kidding. I was done for the day, having caught my share of smaller fish. I caught a very big one but I think I cleaned out all the small ones. Everyone caught one, even poor Saria, who was almost too small to hold the fishing rod. I looked at her. “Poor kid,” I thought to myself. What was wrong with her? I looked at Zelda. “Spoiled,” was all I said. I didn’t mean it though. But she was so easy to rib. Link seemed to have overheard me. I raised my hands in self-defense. Then I climbed up into the bushes, for the pure reason of looking at all the beautiful scenery....er...uhh....okay, so I was spying. Eavesdropping. Whatever. Seeing I was ‘gone’, Zelda started conversing with Link. “Link....remember when I told you about the curse?” she whispered. Link nodded gravely. “Well...it’s starting to take effect, I think....I’m not feeling like I used to. I’m feeling just a natural meanness, a tendency to lash out....a feeling that I wanna go out and punch someone in the nose.” she said. Link sighed. “It may be the curse or it may not. But I get those feelings too. And you may still be recovering from that spell, remember.” said Link. I stifled a gasp. Did this have anything to do with the glove? Zelda sighed. “I remember that Aaron was there....he asked why....oh Link...it’s so scary..” she said. I remembered it perfectly.

‘Aaron....glove....evil....I..will....be...’

I shook my head. “Move over Sherlock.” Zelda heard me and looked up. “Aaron...you...weren’t....uh...eavesdropping, were you?” she asked. I decided to tell the truth. “Go ahead. Punch me....” I said with an air of belligerency. She refrained for a second. “I suppose it doesn’t hurt to know...so you know?” she asked. I nodded. “That glove...it...will make you...eventually...” I didn’t finish. Didn’t want to. Then I saw Saria looking at us. She quickly looked away. I knew what she was thinking though. She’d had an encounter with the glove too...and it didn’t look like it had been a good one...suddenly Zelda and Link shoved me into the pond. “ARGH!” I shouted, falling in. Everyone laughed. “I see nothing funny!” I spluttered. I decided to dive down into the pond. I’m not sure if it was illegal or not but, I did. And I thought to myself as I came up for air and then dove back down.

It was coming together.

And fast.
