Poker Etiquette

Although we are all adults, we are still playing in an environment that serves meals to family's, and small children may be present
Rude and obnoxious behaviour will not be tolerated, and excessive use of profanity at the tables is forbidden.
Also, along the same lines, it is not acceptable to annoy, berate, or abuse another player at the table.
Players not involved in a hand, should refrain from discussing that hand while it is being played by others.
Bad beats happen all the time, but please try to control your anger when it happens to you. Throwing cards or chips will not be tolerated
Collusion is a practice which is strictly forbidden and highly unsportsmanlike. Two players sitting at the same table, should never share information about their hands and use this knowledge to cheat the other players.
If you find yourself sitting at a table where another player is not observing proper poker etiquette, you do have options available to you. You may choose to ignore the player, or if you are offended at the way someone is acting, you also have the option to report the actions of another player to the tournament director, and corrective action will be taken.

Texas Hold'em Rules For Play

The Deal

Texas hold'em poker is a card game. It is played with a typical 52 card deck. Starting with the dealer button, each person is dealt one card. Then a second card. Both cards are face down. After everyone receives their pocket/hole cards (the two cards face down just dealt), then betting occurs.

Note: The dealer button is actually a button that says "dealer" on it or "d" that is passed around the table after each hand. It signifies where the dealing is done from.

The Flop

The dealer turns over three cards in the middle of the table (called "the flop"). These are community cards that each player can use to create the best hand possible out of. Once again betting occurs.

The Turn

The dealer turns over another card making four community cards. This fourth card is called "the turn" or sometimes "fourth street". Betting occurs again.

The River

The dealer turns over the fifth and last community card. This is called "the river" or "fifth street". Betting occurs for the last time.

The Showdown

The remaining players in the hand show their cards in order from the person who bet first. Each player uses his two cards, and the five community cards to create the best hand (5 cards total). A player can use any combination so even if one card from his pocket cards and four of the community cards creates the best hand, it is fine. When all five of the cards in the community make the best hand then everyone splits the pot. This is called "the board plays". Also note that in any time during the game a player can fold and get out of the hand. All bets will be lost at that point.

Start Again

After a hand is completed and the pot taken by the winner, the dealer button is moved one player to the left, and the next hand begins.

All-In

When a player runs out of chips during the course of a hand, he/she does not have to fold. Instead the player can choose to be All-in.
When you are all-in, you call all your chips and the pot is divided into the main pot and side pot. All subsequent chips are hereafter added to the side pot.
At the showdown if the "All-in" player does not have a winning hand, both the side pot and the main pot go to the winning hand, as usual.
At the showdown if the "All-in" player has a winning hand, the main pot goes to the "All-in" player, and the side pot goes to the next best hand.
When several players go All-in, multiple side pots are created. The pots are divided according to hand and order in which the players went All-in.
If a player not all in at the showdown has the winning hand he wins all side pots and the main pot. If an all in player has the strongest hand he/she wins the pot or pots that were collected until he/she went All-in.
Any all in player with a winning hand can only win the pot or pots they are involved in.

Example of Play

If you were involved in a typical hand of Texas Hold’em hand at a $100.00 big blind level, your experience may go something like this:

  1. You are dealt Ace of Spades and 9 of Spades face down;
  2. Betting starts with the player to the left of the Big Blind and he calls $100.00;
  3. You and two other players after you call the $100.00 bet, everyone else folds;
  4. The flop is placed on the table - King, 8, 4, all Spades giving you a Flush;
  5. The player to the left of the dealer bets $100.00, you call the bet with $100.00;
  6. The other two players fold leaving you and the betting player;
  7. The Turn is a 2 of Hearts;
  8. The other player bets $200.00;
  9. You raise $200.00 by putting $400.00 in the pot, the other player calls the additional $200.00;
  10. The last card is flipped face up (The River) and is a 5 of Clubs;
  11. The player to the left of the dealer Checks (bets nothing);
  12. You bet $200.00 and the other player calls it by putting $200.00 in the pot.

Now the two of you show your facedown cards. Your best five cards in this case are your 5 Spades. This is called a Flush. The other two cards (5 of Clubs and 2 of Hearts) are not used in making up your hand. Your opponent shows two eights. Since the Flush (your hand) beats Three of a Kind (your opponent’s hand) on the Hand Ranking chart, you win the money in the pot.
