Andrew Schoch (1850-1925) was born in Wurttemberg, Germany, immigrated to the United States in 1866, settled in Carver County, Minnesota, in 1868, learned English, clerked for J. H. Hullsick, a German grocery store, in St. Paul from 1871 until 1874, married Rosalia Schmeidel in 1874, opened his own grocery store with a cousin, __?__ Weschler, in 1874 with an initial investment of $3,000, operated the grocery business alone from 1880 until 1890, continued to advertise in German until the 1890's, incorporated his business in 1890, occupied an entire city block in 1914, expanded his business beyond the retail grocery business to wholesale groceries, coffee roasting, bread baking, tobacco sales, and butchery and meat products, was doing $2 million in business annually in the 1920's, and was a member of the St. Paul Chamber of Commerce. 1573 West Osceola Avenue: Built in 1919. The building is a two story, eight room, four bedroom, one bathroom, 1489 square foot, stucco house, with a detached garage. The 1930 city directory indicates that William E. Johnson, chairman of the Order of Railway Conductors for the Great Northern RailRoad, and his wife, Edith Johnson, resided at this address. A conductor was the "captain" of the train, supervised other train crew, looked out for the safety of everyone aboard, and made sure that every passenger paid the correct fare. While the engineer was responsible for signals and speed restrictions en route, the conductor determined when a railroad train could safely depart a station and was in charge during emergencies. The conductor's role as chief of the train came from maritime tradition. Most union conductors belonged to either the Order of Railway Conductors, founded in 1868, or the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, founded in 1883 at Oneonta, New York. The Order of Railway Conductors and Brakemen was founded as an order of railroad conductors and later expanded to include brakemen. The Order of Railway Conductors and Brakemen was founded by T. J. "Tommie" Wright and a small band of Illinois Central Gulf conductors in Amboy, Illinois, as the Conductors Union. The name was changed to Order of Railway Conductors of America in 1878. The organization of conductors and other railroad employees was not without competition, conflict, and uncertainty as to jurisdictional and organizational boundaries. Because of a perceived anti-strike attitude by the Order of Railway Conductors, in 1885, in California, the Brotherhood of Railroad Conductors was formed, was initially very popular, caused alarm in the Order leading to the adoption of protective policies, but was absorbed by the Order in 1893. Also in 1893, Eugene V. Debs formed the American Railway Union as a single union for all rail employees, but the organization dissolved after the disastrous Pullman Strike. In 1901, Canadian engineers, conductors, firemen and brakemen formed the Canadian Order of Railway Men, but ties to the separate international unions caused the order to be dissolved. There was also a separate Order of Pullman Car Conductors formed sometime before 1907. In 1942, the Order of Sleeping Car Conductors merged with the Order of Railway Conductors. The union's name was changed in 1954 to the Order of Railway Conductors and Brakemen. In 1969, the Order merged with the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen, Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, and Switchmen's Union of North America to form the United Transportation Union. The Order of Railway Conductors and Brakemen's International Headquarters, Grand Division, was located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with subordinate divisions in the United States, Canada, and the Panama Canal Zone. The Order of Railway Conductors and the Order of Railway Conductors and Brakemen presidents from 1890 to 1967 were C. S. Wheaton, E. E. Clark, Austin B. Garretson, James A. Phillips, Harry W. Fraser, Roy O. Hughes, Louis J. Wagner, and J. A. Paddock.
