3/16: Lake Harriet (Minneapolis)

3/16: Lake Harriet (Minneapolis)

Join the group for a hike around scenic Lake Harriet in west Minneapolis. Lake Harriet was named for the wife of Col. Leavenworth. Her maiden name was Harriet Lovejoy, her home being in Blenheim, Schoharie County, N.Y. She was born in 1791, was married to Leavenworth in the winter of 1813-14, and died at Barrytown, N.Y., September 7, 1854. She came here with her husband and the first troops, August 24, 1819, and was here about one year. Leavenworth received the brevet rank of brigadier general in 1824 and died at the age of 51, July 21, 1834, in an expedition against the Pawnee and Comanche. Fort Leavenworth in Kansas and a city and county there were named in his honor.

From I-35W going south out of downtown Minneapolis, take the 35th Street exit and take Nicollet Avenue south to 42nd Street. Turn west (right) on 42nd Street and continue around the north end of the lake to the bandstand area. Park in the parking lot near the bandshell (42nd and Queen Avenue) and meet by the bandshell. A parking fee may be required by the Minneapolis Park Board to park in this lot. Restaurant afterwards.

Hikers are invited to reconvene for dessert/dinner at the Convention Grill, 3912 Sunnyside Road, Edina.
