June 7, 2007: Jensen Lake/Lebanon Hills Hike (Eagan)

Join Linda for a hike around and about Jensen Lake in Lebanon Hills Regional Park in Eagan. Lebanon Hills Regional Park consists of over 2,000 acres of naturally preserved park land with moraines, eskers and numerous pothole lakes. Lebanon Hills Regional Park is situated on a large expanse of naturally preserved park land, with 40 percent of its land area grassland and the remainder wetland and forest dominated by red oak with some American elm. Surface water resources consist of widely dispersed small lakes and ponds, the largest of which is the 55-acre Jensen Lake. Coyotes and a Canada lynx have also been sighted in the park. Jensen Lake is the largest lake in Eagan, is only 6.5 feet deep, is populated with bullheads, and is not stocked. Lebanon Hills derives its name from nearby Lebanon Township, which was named for Lebanon, New Hampshire, the home town of Charles and H. J. Verrill, who were early settlers in the Eagan area. The city of Eagan was named in honor of Patrick Eagan, an Irish immigrant who moved to the area in 1853, staked a claim of 220 acres, and was the first chairman of the town’s board of supervisors.
