Gia Carangi

Gia had it made. She had everything. She was beautiful and she had a great body. She had attitude and talent. Everyone saw the beauty, no one saw the pain. Her beauty caught the world's attention. Few people saw anything else. Gia was born on January 29, 1960 in Philadelphia. It was when she was 17, in 1977 when Gia traveled to New York to begin her modeling carrer. She almost became a model accidentally. She happened to be in the right place at the right time. The story goes that a local photographer asked her to pose on the dance floor, and so her modeling career began. Her first major modeling job was with Gianni Versace when she was 18. She was quite a change from the typical blonde hair-blue eye model everyone saw as the most beautiful type of women. Gia changed all that. Within the next year Gia became one of the biggest models of the late 1970s. She was also on the covers of Cosmopolitan and Vouge magazine, and was in ads for famous designers. Gia was not ashamed of her body. She took many photos in the nude as well as with her clothes on. But in the inside of all her glamour and fame she had many problems. She was partying. She was a drug addict. Adding to her problems Wilhelmina Cooper, a second mother to Gia and the person who helped to get her modeling carrer started, died in 1980. Gia may have contracted the HIV/AIDS virus from shooting up on drugs through a contaminated needle, but the cause of her AIDS is not known for sure. She died in 1986 on November 18 at 10:00 am, when she was 26. She was the one of the first woman in America to die of complications from the AIDS virus.
