Alaska's roads through the wilderness are few and hard to navigate.
The only road connecting the oil fields of Alaska's North Slope to the
rest of the state is the deadly Haul Road. Join host Geo Beach as he
rides shotgun with one of the roads most legendary truckers during the
treacherous winter season. Geo will learn how to load giant oil pipe,
plow and repair over the course of this 400-mile trek. He'll even ice
the road with highway workers and work with a construction crew on the
historic Alaska-Canada highway.

their base camp. Watch as the overloaded chopper dives and comes
crashing down. Then the dashboard camera of a female police officer
captures a gunfight between the officer and a mad man on a killing
spree. See a 4th of July celebration turn into sheer terror when a
raging twister destroys a home on a lake in Minnesota. Next a highway
patrol officer comes upon a gas tanker on fire and calls for
assistance, but just as the firefighters arrive the flames reach the
tanker. Finally, a daredevil in Florida is fired out of a cannon, but
overshoots his safety net and crashes to the ground.

7-8pm -- Modern Marvels - The Lumberyard.
At the center of the American Dream is the home--and at the center of
its creation or renovation is the lumberyard. We'll explore the
options lumberyards provide for builders and renovators--from natural
to engineered woods. We'll show how plywood and pressed woods are
made, trace exotic woods to jungle and desert, visit a special
lumberyard that deals in recycled and antique woods, and go on an
underwater expedition as divers locate ancient logs buried in the
Great Lakes and New Zealand. We'll see how 50,000-year-old ancient
Kauri wood is "mined" from a bog and is now all the rage among those
who live in mansions and travel on yachts. From the lowly 2-by-4 used
to build a tract home, to a reclaimed set of historic planks used to
make a million-dollar bar in a 5-star hotel, this eye-opening program
hits the nail right on the head.

8-9pm -- Cities of the Underworld - New York: Secret Societies
Today, New York is the biggest city in the country... but it's got
some dark secrets in its past. It was founded by covert groups,
overrun with gangs and mob bosses, and ruled by secret societies.
This is the true foundation of the city that never sleeps, and host
Don Wildman is headed deep beneath the skyscrapers, taxicabs and
street vendors into a New York that few have ever seen before. From a
hidden Freemason tunnel and secret world of the Sandhogs, to mobster
hideaways and gang escape routes, we're uncovering the secret
societies that built New York--from the underground up.

9-10pm -- Ice Road Truckers - Road to the Finale
With the ice road melting at a quickening rate, the truckers reflect
on their first season tackling the treacherous roads of the Arctic. At
the start of the season these veteran drivers from the south were
nothing more than Arctic rookies who had to prove themselves to the
tough northern truckers. Some would be up for the challenge, but
others would make early and unexpected exits. Take a look back at
their favorite moments and get a glimpse of some never-before-seen
footage.

10-11pm -- Evolve - Flight
Humans have always been fascinated with the one part of the world that
we could not conquer--the sky. How did the earth's first flying
creatures come to be? Examine the first vertebrate flyer, the
pterosaur, which took to the air over 220 million years ago and
eventually evolved to be the size of small airplanes. Scientists have
long pondered how they, the largest flying creatures ever, were able
to achieve such an astonishing feat. Scientists examine the fossil
record compare pterosaurs to living birds to try and unlock how some
species evolved to have the remarkable trait of flight.

7-8pm -- Modern Marvels - More Doomsday Tech.
The second deadly hour examines more threats--both natural and
manmade--that may endanger civilization. From the far reaches of space
to tiny viruses, doomsday sources are many. But so are technologies
used to keep doomsday at bay. Asteroids of significant size have hit
our planet before and likely will again. Asteroid hunters demonstrate
the Near Earth Asteroid Tracking (NEAT) program and methods being
developed to destroy earth-aimed asteroids. Then, it's onto
bioterrorism's sinister technologies--how highly virulent agents like
smallpox and plague can be weaponized. Next, an ex-hacker turned
cyber-security expert shows how vulnerable the nation's computers are
to cyberterror. Finally, we visit the controversial world of
biotechnology. Could genetically engineered crops backfire? Does a
brave new world of genetically selected beings loom in our
not-so-distant future?

8-9pm -- MonsterQuest - Birdzilla
Native Americans have long revered huge birds called Thunderbirds.
There was a rash of giant bird sightings in Illinois, Texas and Alaska
back in the 1970's. A giant bird with a 15-foot wingspan allegedly
attacked a small child in Illinois. Could there really be a giant bird
or is it mass hysteria? Take a scientific journey and follow the many
eyewitnesses' accounts across the country and examine the most
compelling evidence. One-part history, one-part science and one part
monster, discover the truth behind legendary monsters.

9-10pm -- MonsterQuest - American Werewolf
The werewolf is a centuries-old legend based on myth, not a real
animal. However, local eyewitnesses in Wisconsin and Michigan report
seeing a dogman--a tall hairy man-beast. Professional hunters and
trackers armed with tranquilizer guns will be deployed in an area of
recent sightings to find this creature. For the first time polygraphs
and hypnosis will be used on eyewitnesses with astonishing results.
One-part history, one-part science and one part monster, discover the
truth behind legendary monsters.

10-11pm -- Jurassic Fight Club - Hunter Becomes Hunted
A quarry in south central Colorado is found to hold the remains of
four different species of dinosaurs. Two are docile herbivores:
Camarasaurus and Stegosaurus. But the others remains are those of
predators: Allosaurus and Ceratosaurus. Many of the bones have the
telltale signs of bite and claw marks. By comparing the size, depth
and shape of the marks and comparing them to the teeth and claws of
the predators, experts are able to identify which of the dinosaurs is
responsible for the grisly act of carnage. Then, using the forensic
evidence found at the site, and intriguing new results learned through
CAT scanning; they are able to reconstruct a battle that took place
between the two predators, in a fight for dominance.

7-8pm -- Modern Marvels - Insulation.
It keeps us warm. It keeps us cool. It protects us and makes our world
more comfortable. As simple as a pane of glass, or as complex as the
fuselage of a space station, it's all around us, but is almost always
out of sight. We explore where insulation technology has been, where
it is today, and where it's going. We'll visit the manufacturing
facilities of two of the most recognizable insulating materials:
fiberglass and foam; and explore how insulation has evolved.
Historical highlights include how the ancient Romans and Greeks
insulated their homes, as well as the natives of tropical and arctic
climates. New technologies covered include insulated concrete forms
and gas-filled panels. Whether at home or in the office, on a space
station, or beneath the sea, insulation is essential for making our
world habitable. We'll show that how we use insulation, and how we
develop it, will be a major factor in how we conserve our supply of
energy in the coming years.

8-9pm -- MonsterQuest - Giant Killer Snakes
Head deep into the Venezuela wilderness where there have been
sightings of huge man-eating snakes--anaconda. For the first time ever
an industrial acoustic sonar camera will be used to search for these
monsters. The investigation will also search the Everglades of Florida
where pet pythons have escaped and are multiplying and growing to huge
sizes, preying on all kinds of animals, even swallowing a full grown
alligator in one case. Could a human become their next victim?

9-10pm -- MonsterQuest - Ohio Grassman
Just miles from the industrial cities of Ohio, there is a bogeyman
that has terrified local children for over a century. According to
stories and sightings, the Grassman is similar to a Bigfoot, but
builds strange nests and has been known to attack. Can science help
explain this creature? Is a primate skull, a strange print and a new
video the first direct proof behind the legendary Grassman? We'll sift
through the existing evidence and take to the skies in a search for
what is stalking Ohio.

10-11pm -- MonsterQuest - Black Beast of Exmoor
Between 1979 and 1983 over 200 livestock were torn apart on the moors
of England. Despite the efforts of armed marines, no predator was ever
found and the attacks continue to this day. Eyewitnesses allege that a
strange "black beast" is the culprit, but new video evidence could
have answers to the mystery. An expedition team interviews the
witnesses, analyzes the evidence and attempts to find out what is
truly prowling the English countryside.

7-8pm -- Modern Marvels - Civil War Tech.
America protects its homeland with the most technologically advanced
military force ever conceived. Although they fight 21st-century
battles worldwide, the technology unleashed is directly descended from
a war fought more than 140 years ago. This episode explores how the
War between North and South was the first modern war, and the
technology used in it was a quantum leap beyond any previous conflict.
The machine gun, aerial reconnaissance, advanced battlefield medicine,
instantaneous communication, ironclad ships, even the first aircraft
carrier were all innovations developed during the Civil War. We'll
investigate improvements in weapons, sea power, transportation, troop
conveyance, food processing, medical care, and telecommunications. At
a time when the nation was divided, Civil War technology
revolutionized the way war was waged. Today, those technological
milestones have evolved to ensure that our modern military has no
equal in the world.

8-9pm -- Modern Marvels - Traps
Gotcha! Traps are a device designed to capture and kill, but they
don't always harm their prey. Often necessary to the survival of a
species, watch as Black Bears are trapped by the West Virginia
Division of Natural Resources biologists for a population study. Feral
cats left stranded in New Orleans after Katrina are trapped, neutered,
and released. Head underwater to see how giant screw traps count
salmon on the Columbia River. Man traps? See high tech versions,
straight out of action movies.

9-10pm -- Gangland - 16 - Biker Wars
A gritty, true-life series exposing the world of history's most
notorious and dangerous gangs.

10-11pm -- Shockwave - 29 - Shockwave
Watch as an Army training exercise in Fort Campbell turns to tragedy
when two Blackhawk helicopters collide. Then, recall one of the most
terrifying bank robberies ever, when two men in full body armor and
with automatic weapons opened fire on the LAPD. A television reporter
and cameraman are filming the unveiling of a new structure in
Stockton, California, when a cable snaps; the structure collapses and
the newsmen are caught running for their lives. Next, a policeman's
dashboard camera catches a high speed chase as it comes to a crashing
stop at a gas station; the car slams into the gas pump and erupts into
flames. Finally, a para-glider lands in live power-lines with over 200
volts of electricity flowing through them.

7-8pm -- Tougher In Alaska - Dangerous Roads
Alaska's roads through the wilderness are few and hard to navigate.
The only road connecting the oil fields of Alaska's North Slope to the
rest of the state is the deadly Haul Road. Join host Geo Beach as he
rides shotgun with one of the roads most legendary truckers during the
treacherous winter season. Geo will learn how to load giant oil pipe,
plow and repair over the course of this 400-mile trek. He'll even ice
the road with highway workers and work with a construction crew on the
historic Alaska-Canada highway.

8-9pm -- Ice Road Truckers - 11 - Edge of the Earth
It is a job only a few would dare. This year, four ice road truckers,
Hugh, Alex, Rick and Drew, return from last season to join Arctic
veterans as they venture 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle to drive
the most isolated and dangerous ice roads in North America. In the
first episode, Hugh and Drew are introduced to their new boss, while
Alex waits on his first load of the season. Rick runs into problems on
his way up north, delaying his first ride on the ice. Throughout the
season, they will be gunning their rigs, carrying up to 88,000 pounds
over a highway made entirely of ice onto the Arctic Ocean, delivering
vital materials to natural gas and mineral exploration sites.

9-10pm -- Ice Road Truckers - 12 - Mechanical Mayhem
After just two days in the Arctic, the critical demands of the oil
exploration sites are testing the limits of the truckers and their
machines. Both the veterans and rookies are delayed in the shop by
mechanical failures, which threaten to halt operations at the Mallik
Research site and the Wurmlinger barge. In a last ditch attempt to
meet their deadlines, Hugh must resuscitate a truck that has been
dormant in the Arctic cold for 4 years. Rick has a mishap that causes
irreparable damage to his truck, while Alex witnesses the aftermath of
an ice road accident. And Drew, who quit his job before even seeing
the Ice Road, looks for a new employer and settles for what might be
the least demanding truck-related job in town.

10-11pm -- Ice Road Truckers - 13 - The Big Blizzard
Just five days into the Arctic adventure, Mother Nature is about to
strike and wreak havoc on the ice roads. Making matters worse is a
report of a trucker who has run off the road and is stranded on the
weakest part. The storm will make the ice roads impassable and
dangerous. Since safety of the drivers is of the utmost concern, the
roads must be shutdown. The closure will cost the trucking companies
and the gas exploration sites valuable money and time. Kurt, the
no-nonsense boss of Northwind Industries, is testing Hugh's mettle.
He's given Hugh the assignment of schooling young gun John on how to
operate a vac-truck. Drew finally drives on the ice roads, but halfway
through the haul, he gets sick and has to ride shotgun the rest of the
day. Rick continues to wait for his truck to be fixed. He's had two
accidents in four days and is not making any money.

7-8pm -- Ice Road Truckers - 21 - Man vs. Ice
Rising temperatures are melting away the ice road, making it a dash to
the finish line for the crew breaking down the Langely site. Every
last piece of equipment must be transported down the ice to Inuvik
before the Arctic waters reclaim the road. Hugh is hauling an unsteady
load of heavy gauge cable, making his rig so back-heavy that he
struggles to get traction on the slippery surface. One wrong move
could spell disaster for Hugh, but also for rookie Devon, who makes
his debut run at a time when the road is at its most fragile.

8-9pm -- Ice Road Truckers - 22 - The Big Thaw
Warming temperatures are causing overflows all over the ice road, and
with water rushing through cracks in the ice, hauling loads just got a
lot more dangerous. Jody and Brett take on the challenge of removing
the 66-ton derrick from the Langley site. The massive rig will have to
be "two-trucked"--one truck will make the entire journey traveling
backwards. Although maintenance crews create a detour around the
overflow, Jody and Brett still need the help of a pilot car to
navigate their double load along its winding turns. Forced to wait for
the pilot car to arrive, the truckers sit with 200,000 pounds of dead
weight on weakened ice, with freezing ocean water below. Hugh is
hauling one of the only standard-sized loads of the day, so while
everyone else is stuck driving at 15 mph, the Polar Bear is running
full steam ahead.

9-10pm -- Ice Road Truckers - 23 - The World Crumbles
Hugh and Eric are neck-in-neck in their race to claim dominance over
the ice road, but with only days before the end of the season, time is
running out and the ocean waters are closing in. As the truckers race
to remove every last piece of equipment from the Langley site, an
Arctic whiteout threatens to halt operations, and may mean the
difference between winning and losing in the load count. This handful
of die-hard truckers pushes for every last load, but as the world
around them crumbles, someone will be kicked off the ice.

10-11pm -- Sandhogs - 01 - What Lies Beneath
Hundreds of feet below one of the world's most famous cities, a
different breed of men dig and blast their way through solid rock.
These urban miners create the tunnels that ensure the survival of the
city above. Meet Walking Boss Morgan Curran and the Sandhogs of Local
147. Under great pressure, these men work to complete the Croton
Filtration Plant, a facility that will help ensure the safety of the
city's water supply. In one tunnel they use the "Mole", an enormous
tunnel-boring machine that relentlessly eats away at the rock. In the
other tunnel, they're using large quantities of dynamite to blast
their way through the earth. When a void develops along one of the
tunnel walls, the hogs race to put up ring steel to prevent a cave in.
And while the Brooklyn Bridge celebrates its 125th anniversary, the
Sandhogs continue to toil below, preparing and detonating their next
blast.

8-10pm -- The Kennedy Assassination: Beyond Conspiracy -
No other murder in history has produced as much speculation as the
assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Forty years after he was
fatally shot, more than 70 percent of polled Americans believe there
was a conspiracy and that Lee Harvey Oswald did not act alone. In this
2-hour special, ABC News Anchor Peter Jennings takes a fresh look at
the assassination, the evidence, the various and many theories, and an
exact computer simulation of the famous Abraham Zapruder film that
offers surprising results.

10-12am -- The 9/11 Conspiracies: Fact or Fiction -
Examines the various conspiracy theories espoused on the Internet, in
articles and in public forums that attempt to explain the 9/11
attacks. It includes theories that the World Trade Center was brought
down by a controlled demolition; that a missile, not a commercial
airliner, hit the Pentagon; and that members of the U.S. government
orchestrated the attacks in hopes of creating a war in the Middle
East. Each conspiracy argument is countered by a variety of experts in
the fields of engineering, intelligence and the military. The program
also delves into the anatomy of such conspiracies and how they grow on
the Internet.

Collider" is an experiment created by the greatest minds in physics.
It cost $10 billion and its resulting data has the potential to
explain why we and the Universe exist. Their idea is to smash protons
towards one another at the speed of light, trying to mimic what
happened in the milliseconds after The Big Bang. Viewers will go on an
amazing journey involving the struggles to plan and build the LHC, how
it was constructed and what are its mechanics. Explore the future of
what's possible through the geniuses of today.

9-10pm -- Sandhogs - 01 - What Lies Beneath
Hundreds of feet below one of the world's most famous cities, a
different breed of men dig and blast their way through solid rock.
These urban miners create the tunnels that ensure the survival of the
city above. Meet Walking Boss Morgan Curran and the Sandhogs of Local

10-11pm -- Evolve - Communication
How has our ability to communicate defined us as a species? Sharing
information with each other has allowed humans to rise to the top of
the food chain and dominate our environments. But humans aren't the
only species that can communicate. Organisms as simple as bacteria can
communicate, a strategy that lets them cooperate to take down
creatures millions of times their own size. Fish use pheromones to
warn each other about predators and find mates. Chemicals are also an
effective means of communicating on land, and they've allowed
insects--some of nature's smallest and most unassuming animals--to
become the most populous and prolific on earth. The ability to
interact stretches back billions of years and has often been one of
the primary factors in a species ability to evolve and survive.

7-8pm -- Modern Marvels - Fire.
Fire--we have learned to create and control it, but have yet to tame
it? It's alive--it breathes, feeds, and grows. Fire is behind
essentially every component of the modern world and has spawned entire
industries. We'll feature great feats in pyrotechnology, or the
intentional use and control of fire by humans--from the massive
8-story fire-breathing boilers that create steam heat for downtown
Philadelphia, to the nearly 2,000 degree flames that create
electricity at a biomass plant. From the massive coal-fired
locomotives that powered us across the continent, to the rocket
engines that took us to the moon, we'll cover what fire is, how we
have learned to create and harness it, and its behavior with various
fuel sources. At a match factory, we see how the seeds of fire are
made and explore the significance of this seemingly simple innovation.
We also take a look at the important role that fire has played in
technological advances as well as warfare.

8-9pm -- MonsterQuest - Giant Squid Found?
Is the legend of the Kraken, a tentacled beast as large as a whale,
based on myth or a real creature? Take an expedition to the Sea of
Cortez, Mexico where fishermen regularly claim to encounter large
schools of giant squid. Watch as squid expert Scott Cassel uses lures
with built-in cameras in an attempt to video a Kraken-sized squid
1,000 feet below the ocean. What Cassel and his team discover will
make history. One-part history, one-part science and one part monster,
discover the truth behind legendary creatures.

9-10pm -- MonsterQuest - Giganto: The Real King Kong
An exploration of the Giganto (King Kong) legend using modern science,
technology, and historic eyewitness accounts. Gigantopithecus (the
Latin term for "Giant Ape") is believed to have existed 9 to 5-million
years ago and supposedly was around 10-feet tall. Some fossil evidence
shows that it may have lived in China or India. Scientists of varying
fields will attempt to genetically connect Giganto to modern-day
creatures from around the world. Could Bigfoot be a relative? Forensic
testing, extensive scientific research, 3-D animation, and body
reconstruction will help determine the true mystery behind this
prehistoric ape.

10-11pm -- Jurassic Fight Club - Biggest Killers
Utahraptor, Allosaurus, Majungatholus, Albertosaurus and Tyrannosaurus
were the elite killers of the prehistoric world. Scientists now know
more about these predatory dinosaurs by studying their skeletal
designs and using information revealed through CAT scanning
technology. Listen as the expert's size up these predators found in
numerous worldwide locations and various time periods in their search
of the largest killer of all.

8-9pm -- The Man Who Predicted 9/11 -
In 2001, Rick Rescorla was the 62-year-old head of security at the
Morgan Stanley Bank situated high up in the South Tower at the World
Trade Center. Rescorla was convinced that Osama Bin Laden would use
jet planes to try and destroy the World Trade Center. Long before
September 11th, he developed an evacuation plan for the bank, hugely
unpopular amongst the city whiz kids who worked there who thought he
was mad. His evacuation plan however ultimately saved 3,000 of their
lives. Rescorla's plan was put into effect after the first jet hit the
North Tower--even though WTC managers were instructing everyone to
stay in the buildings. When the second jet hit the South Tower, he
averted panic and organized a rapid evacuation. Rescorla went back
inside to help those injured and trapped get out. He was still inside
when the building collapsed. His body was never found.

9-11pm -- 102 Minutes that Changed America / Witness to 9/11 -
Discover rarely seen and heard archives that document the 102 minutes
between the first attack on the World Trade Center to the collapse of
the second tower. This commercial-free special uses unique material
from sources ranging from amateur photography and video to FDNY, NYPD,
Port Authority and emergency dispatch radio recordings, photography
and video. Also seen is footage broadcast outside the US, electronic
messages and voicemails and "outtakes" culled from raw network
footage. Then, watch interviews with individuals who provided videos
of the events of that day. The interviews with the filmmakers will
provide context for the circumstances they were in, why they shot
video, what the footage means to them, and where they were on that
day.

8-9pm -- UFO Files - Deep Sea UFOs.
Join us for a detailed examination of the little-known phenomenon of
USOs, or "Unidentified Submerged Objects", an advanced type of UFO
that can operate just as efficiently in water as in the atmosphere.
These supposed otherworldly vessels have been reported, some believe,
as far back as ancient Egypt. Others believe that USOs were reported
by Alexander the Great and Christopher Columbus, and might even

animals to become small and others to get huge. Understanding the
evolution of size tells us why giant dinosaurs went extinct while the
first tiny mammals thrived; gives us answers to why mammoths evolved
into pygmies when restricted to islands; and why carnivorous mammals
have never grown to weigh more than a ton. Whether it's the speed of
movement or population numbers, the biological world revolves--and

tunnel-boring machine that relentlessly eats away at the rock. In the
other tunnel, they're using large quantities of dynamite to blast
their way through the earth. When a void develops along one of the
tunnel walls, the hogs race to put up ring steel to prevent a cave in.
And while the Brooklyn Bridge celebrates its 125th anniversary, the
Sandhogs continue to toil below, preparing and detonating their next
blast.

8-10pm -- The Universe - Beyond the Big Bang
The universe began with a massive expansion, billions and billions of
years ago, and it continues to expand with every passing second. The
idea that the universe, and man's very existence, began with a "Big
Bang" is no longer a topic of debate among most scientists--it is
essentially taken as fact. How has man come to this conclusion, and
how has our knowledge evolved so that we can recreate the very first
seconds of our universe and all that has developed since? Interviews
with the world's leading physicists and historians are woven together
with animated recreations and first-person accounts to explain
concepts such as the formation of galaxies, the creation of elements
and the formation of Earth itself.

10-11pm -- Sandhogs - 04 - Sandhogs

7-8pm -- Modern Marvels - Silver Mines.
It was called the "mother lode", a deposit of silver so massive that
it would produce $300-million in its first 25 years of operation,
establish Nevada as a state, and bankroll the Union Army in the Civil
War. Named after an early investor, we'll see how the Comstock Lode,
discovered near Virginia City, proved to be a scientific laboratory
from which vast improvements in mining technology and safety were
pioneered, including innovations in drilling, ventilation, drainage,
and ore processing.

8-9pm -- Modern Marvels - Soft Drinks
They account for nearly 30% of all beverages consumed in the U.S., and
have been quenching our thirst for over a century. Visit the world's
third largest soft drink supplier, Dr. Pepper, and then watch the
scientists at Gatorade collect an athlete's sweat for analysis. Your
brain will freeze with the Slurpee, get a jolt with the energy drink
of the 21st Century and explore the roots of Ginger Ale and Root Beer.
Finally discover how Jones Soda dares to make a soft drink taste like
a Christmas ham.

9-11pm -- Ancient Ink -
Tattoos are an ancient ritual practiced around the world, by nearly
every culture. Each culture has its own reasons for the practice, and
many have unique ways to administer them. In this special, host Craig
Reynolds will get tattooed, by traditional methods, while he visits
these different cultures, experiencing first hand what it's like and
what these tattoos mean to people. Craig's travels take him to far off
places across the globe including: New Zealand, Japan, Hawaii, and
Hollywood.

7-8pm -- Modern Marvels - Diamond Mines.
Half a mile below the earth's surface, men mine for rough diamonds--a
pure carbon substance. Brilliant when cut and polished, they are
marketed as the most precious gem in the world. From the earliest
mines of the 4th century BC to today's technological wonders in South
Africa, we explore the history and technology of the diamond mine.

8-9pm -- Modern Marvels - Dangerous Roads
Take a ride along some of the world's most dangerous roads. From
Bolivia's "Death Road," to California's fog-shrouded Highway 99, find
the danger that waits behind every blind curve. Visit the Federal
Highway Administration's test laboratory to see what's being done to
make roads safer in the U.S. Finally, ride along in extreme four-wheel
drive trucks with some adrenaline junkies that drive boulder-strewn
trails just for the fun of it!

9-10pm -- Ancient Discoveries - Ships.
Lurking beneath Lake Nemi's blue waters lay the titans of Roman naval
engineering--the Nemi Ships. Titanic luxury liners of the ancient
world, they held inventions lost for thousands of years. But why were
they built? Were they Caligula's notorious floating pleasure
palaces--rife with excess and debauchery? Flagships of a giant sea
force? It took Mussolini's obsession with all things Roman to finally
prise the two wrecks from the depths of Lake Nemi near Rome. Using an
ancient Roman waterway, he drained the lake and rescued the ships, an
accomplishment captured on film that we access to illustrate this
astounding story. Sophisticated ancient technology discovered in the
boats transformed the understanding of Roman engineering overnight.
Yet by 1944, the adventure had turned sour and the retreating German
army torched the boats. We reveal the mysteries of the Nemi Ships and
the ancient technology that made them possible.

10-11pm -- Sandhogs - 04 - Sandhogs

Good Morning, Mr. Bond

Episodes of the quirky Northern Exposure are on Hallmark Channel. And episodes of the even quirkier "Twin Peaks" are sometimes on Bravo. Monstervision review & host segments of the Twin Peaks movie "Firewalk With Me."

Fun fact:
Griffith Park Observatory According to Ripley's Believe It Or Not, the 800-mile long Aruwimi River, which flows through the Aruwimi Forest in the Congo, was unwittingly named by famous explorer David Livingstone. He asked a native what the name of the river was. The native replied "Aruwimi," which means, "What is he saying?"

In 1942, Adolf Hitler inherited 9,000 acres of grazing land in Colorado from German relatives. The PT Boat of WW2 was based on a blueprint from Andrew Higgins, a bootlegger who had used the speedboat design for rumrunning during Prohibition. And Arlington National Cemetery has four Tomb Of The Unknown Soldiers (WW1, WW2, Korea & Vietnam) but only 3 bodies: identification processes have become so good that all remains returned from Vietnam are eventually identified!

In 1963, ventriloquist Paul Winchell was awarded a patent for the first successful artificial heart. The plastic heart was first tested on a calf, which lived 94 days.

"I've come up with a set of rules that describe our reactions to technologies:
1. Anything that is in the world when you're born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works.
2. Anything that's invented between when you're fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it.
3. Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the natural order of things." Douglas Adams (1952-2001, Hitchhhiker's Guide to the Galaxy)
