Carpentry


Assisted in the construction of a student-built sauna, a gazebo, a garage, and a house, utilizing all areas of construction (blueprint reading, foundations (treated wood and concrete block), concrete slabs, framing, roofing (asphalt shingles and wood shakes), window & door installations, insulating, sheet rock, painting, and finish carpentry, etc.)

Radio Broadcasting


Radio DJ: KDRS-FM (1995-1996); KBSB 89.7 FM (1995-1997).

Broadcast Audio Production: Wrote and produced a broadcast quality radio production (Waking Up the Neighbors); created radio news stories and commercials utilizing SoundEdit 16.

Television Broadcasting


Television Control Room Operator: While at Bemidji State University, I worked in the control room for three campus news programs (The Mix; News, Reviews, & Menus; KBSU Live at Five) where I learned such operations as Chyron, VTR, teleprompter, audio control, video switcher, and camera operation. My main duty was as the audio engineer, which involved the coordination of microphones with the on-air talent, and switching mics on and off on cue.

News Anchor: Served as co-entertainment anchor/entertainment director for KBSU-17 (1995-1997; The Mix; News, Reviews, & Menus; KBSU Live at Five). This involved viewing movies, writing reviews, typing reviews into the teleprompter, and serving as anchorperson.

Scriptwriting: Learned various methods of scriptwriting, including the two column method used for producing news stories; the teleprompter method; and screenwriting - wrote one award-winning short film script (In the Eyes of Marion Crane) and two feature length film scripts (Moosebirds; Hat Trick Avenue).

Directing: Produced and directed a short student film (The Confession).

Video Editing: Wrote, directed, produced, and edited (using a non-linear video editing system) numerous television broadcast quality news stories.

Newspaper Production


The Star of the North (Virginia High School Student Newspaper, 1987-1993): served six years as the newspaper’s resident film reviewer and occasional writer of short fiction.

Ad Sales: (1995 – 1996) Served as an ad sales representative for the Bemidji State University student newspaper.

I began my career at Family Video in January 1994. I worked for Ron and Winnie Lackner, who own a number of video rental stores in northern Minnesota. My responsibilities included managing the store, tending to customer’s questions and requests, providing useful information about movies, alphabetizing the video titles, maintaining the upcoming new releases schedule, calling late renters, filling out slips, and cleaning.

I was employed at US Steel in July 1995, as part of a special 12-week summer employment program. If you were attending college and had a relative working at US Steel, you had the opportunity of working in the mines to earn money for college and gain experience. In 1995, I worked for ten weeks in the Fines Crusher. My responsibilities included picking metal from conveyor belts, keeping an eye on the crushers, and cleaning.

In 1998, I worked for eight weeks in the Fines Crusher, as part of a special 8-week summer employment program. My responsibilities included sweeping the floors around the plant, shoveling rock from under numerous conveyor belts, emptying oil barrels, and hosing the floors.

I began my career at McDonald's in May 1992. I worked for Charles Klinefelter, who owns a number of stores in northern Minnesota, and is a very caring and generous man who has won numerous awards for the quality, service, and cleanliness of his stores. My responsibilities included preparing and serving the best quality food, and cleaning.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

I volunteered at the Virginia Regional Medical Center and the Virginia Convalescent Center when I was in elementary school and junior high. I often worked in the hospital gift shop or served coffee to the nursing home residents.

During my freshman and sophomore years in high school (1991-1993), I volunteered as part of the Virginia High School Key Club, doing such community services as Adopt-A-Highway, clean-up of a lakeside park, and as parking lot attendant during the 1992 Land of the Loon Festival. I also attended two midwest Key Club conventions as a representative of my high school.
