BIOGRAPHY

Her music is different, a heady mix of rock, funk, pop, and R&B. But that's hardly surprising when you check her out. In the tradition of black female rock'n'soul artists like Tina Turner, Joyce Kennedy of Mother's Finest and Nona Hendryx, she's a strong free spirit, self-assured and confident without being cocky or arrogant; she describes herself as passionate, emotional and expressive. And, one listen to Feelings, Esperanza's LaFace Records debutconfirms that her description fits: the music is tough, sometimes tender; hard, sometimes soothing; at times, wild, surreal; and then, sensitive and melodic. But regardless of attempts at categorization, Esperanza's music is always honest, real. "The music on my album is about me, my life, how I feel, the things I've been through, what I've experienced that's made me who I am.", says this bold and beautiful young woman, who contributed lyrically to five of the album's ten cuts.

From the groove-laden backbeat of the infectious first single, They Don't Understand Me to the down-home, old school bluesy feel of the standout Come Dance With Me (produced and co-written by Heavy D.), Feelings is a musical canvas of bright colors, rich textures, light and shade. The subject matter ranges from the self-explanatory affirmation of My Choice (a tune Esperanza co-wrote and co-produced) to the potent observation that indeed, Seasons Change which doesn't necessarily mean that people do. "That song's all about evolution, how whatever's happening on the outside, my spirit remains the same.", Esperanza explains. Then, Why Oh Why, a tune I wrote and produced for the album is about how the first impression you get in a relationship may not be what's really going on. When you find out something isn't how you thought it was, all you can do is move on and learn from the experience. And, like I said, the music I'm doing is all about what I've learned in my own life."
