Who We Are

First Baptist Church is the only independent Baptist church in town. It has been a light in the Cannon Falls area for nearly 25 year. We presently average 50 in Sunday School and 65 in our Morning Worship services. One pastor and many faithful, dedicated members carry out the work. Occasionally, extension students from Pillsbury Baptist Bible College also aid us in this work.

First Baptist Church is an independent church. It is not tied to any denomination or religious organization on a local, state, national, or international level. The head of the church is Jesus Christ. The pastor and deacons are appointed by the membership as shepherds who feed the flock, lead the flock, and defend the flock. There is no hierarchy that directs, supports, or controls this church in what it does or how it spends the monies. That direction comes from the membership of the church. First Baptist Church is self-governing, self-supporting, and self-propagating.

What We Believe

We believe that God's written word, the Bible, is His absolute standard for all of life. Everything we believe or teach and everything we do must come under the authority of Scripture.

We identify the church as Baptist because we believe the Historic Baptist Distinctives accurately portray the Scriptures' position on church faith and practice.

All preaching and teaching is supported by Scripture. We encourage everyone to bring a Bible and compare the teaching or preaching with the text. Our goal is to free people from the teacher. We want to help them to find what God wants from their own study of the Scriptures.

We are less "traditional" that many churches. Every religious tradition must be compared to the teachings of Scripture. We endeavor to abandon wayward traditions instead of forcing them upon the Scriptures.

What is God's Plan for Your Life?

Please do not dismiss this as arrogance. God's Word answers this question very precisely. The Bible teaches that God has a purpose for every life, regardless of whether or not a person recognizes God's plan. He has revealed His perfect will in the Bible. He permits people to reject His plan, but His word warns of the serious consequences that accompany a rejection of God's plan.

First, God wants to make every person spiritually alive (Ephesians 2:1-10). All are born spiritually dead. He has graciously provided life by faith in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ for the sins of each individual upon the face of this earth. Sincere religious works will not provide life. The Bible states, "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast (Ephesians 2:8,9)." After life has been restored, God's plan continues. Every person has been created to do God's work on this earth (Ephesians 2:10). It carries forth with public confession of Jesus Christ as one's Savior from sin. This is demonstrated by the ordinances of Baptism and the Lord's Supper and by joining a body of believers. Any person who has exercised faith in Jesus Christ but has not obeyed in these areas cannot know God's plan for his life.

Beyond salvation and public confession, God has a specific purpose unique to every person. There is a joy to be found in discovering God's special purpose for one's life. The Bible compares the church to a living body (1 Corinthians 12:4-27; Romans 12:4-8). No two members are exactly alike. Each has been fashioned by God for a special purpose. The uniting force in the body is not similar gifts; it is the same head, Jesus Christ.
