THE HAILSTORM -- 15 MAY 1998

The front of the house took the worst hit. Note that all the windows are damaged, and that in many cases the hail broke through three panes of glass before spilling glass shards and hailstones throughout the house. The salad shredder effect of green leaf bits stuck to the house is due to the fact that the trees were completely defoliated. Note that the trees above and behind the house have no leaves left on them. Also see that in the upper left window, the hail destroyed the interior Venetian blind as well.

Here is a close-up of the metal downspout on the side of the house. Note the depth of the hail dents, and that the hailstones hit the house horizontally. They were blown into the side of the house by sustained 80 mph (130 km/hr) winds. Also notice how dented the siding of the house is, and the drift of hail left at the bottom of the garage door, at least 1 foot (300 mm) deep.

Here is the sight of our backyard! Our largest tree came down, and was hung up on the neighbor's trees beyond. The light spots on the fence are pits caused by the hail. The grass is covered with hail, downed branches, and a 2 inch (50 mm) depth of shredded green leaves.
