Jessica English is an English teacher. Really. She teaches eighth-grade at Carey Junior High, the same school she went to as a kid. Above all things in life, English loves English and working with eighth-graders. "They're just so wacky," she says. "One minute they're kids and the next they're adults. They have such a deep and meaningful perspective on life. Besides, eighth-graders are just fun."
Although teaching has been her career ambition since sixth grade, English has held many other jobs. She has been a waitress, telemarketer, journalist, job coach, drive-through jockey, Hardee's moose, receptionist, secretary, birthday clown, cashier, babysitter, typesetter, editor, teacher and mom. Among her achievements are editing two literary/arts magazines, presenting at the 2001 NCTE conference, balancing a loaded serving tray on her head, earning a KGWN Golden Apple Award in 2005 and, above all, raising her son Ethan.
In her spare time, English loves to listen to music, watch movies, travel, camp, play Bop-It and surf the Net. Mostly, though, she spends her time grading and planning.
