TUNDRA 1980-1990
Topic: IN LOVING MEMORY
A neighbor and colleague had a litter
of of pups. It was a back yard
breeding and none of the pups was healthy.

I had one of the first picks and picked a magnificent silver pup with
ice blue eyes, who from day one
had problems breathing.
She had to be put to sleep
at 3 months of age because of
an incurable lung problem.
Tundra was the last puppy left
in the litter, she was the
"only one who didn't have
pretty markings" and the only
one who didn't have blue eyes.
They offered her to me as a
replacement. I remember my mom
saying "so what if she's
ugly...you wanted a companion
not a show dog". And so I brought
her home.
Tundra grew into an extraordinarily
beautiful dog. At the age of 2 it
was discovered that she had a
severe case of hip dysplasia,
to the point where most dogs,
back in those days, would be
put to sleep. But my vet and I
opted to let her live her life
as comfortably and as long as
possible. Even the awful pain
never stopped her from loving to run.
She required increasingly large
doses of steroids and
anti-inflammatories, increasingly
frequent trips to the vet for
injections to control her pain
and inflammation - but I had her for almost
11 years. She could look
into my soul. We did everything
together, we loved to snowshoe
and go for long walks and rides in
the car. My vet said we had a
bond like Timmy and Lassi.
Tundra was my heart, my soul,
my dearest friend and confidante.
If it wasn't for the love of
this dog shining through to me
during some of the darkest days
of my life, I don't know if I'd be
here today. At the end of her life,
she let me know that it was time to
let her go. I knew from the loving,
curious gaze she gave me the night
before the final dawn..that her
concern was for me. She hadn't
come into the house for 3 days,
but would lie under a tree as far
from the house as her cable
would allow her to go. But that
night before she died,
I was sitting on my front
stoop with my head on my knees crying.
I looked up and she was lying
at my feet, gazing at me with
a look that asked if I would be
ok. I told her how much I adored
her and thanked her for all she
had given to me. And then I told
her I would be alright. I put my
head back down and when I looked
again, she was back under her tree.
The next morning we took our last
ride in the car together and she
sat with her head on my shoulder
for the entire 20 mile drive to the vet's.
There was misery, and gratitude,
and knowing in her eyes that morning
as we said our silent goodbyes.
Tundra, my Tundra - I will never forget you.

THE END OF THE STORY. KEEP SCROLLING DOWN TO THE BEGINNING
Topic: IN LOVING MEMORY
IT IS GETTING TIME FOR HER TO LEAVE.

"TELL ME, MY MOST PRECIOUS FRIEND,
WILL YOU BE OK? IT IS GETTING TIME
THAT I MUST LEAVE"
"YES", I ANSWERED HER, "I WILL BE OK.
BUT I WILL NEVER, EVER FORGET".

TUNDRA JUST WEEKS BEFORE SHE DIED
THIS IS THE END OF THE STORY.
