Home Newsflash! Archives Photo Gallery Films And TV Opinion WTF? About Me

Welcome to my site. Okay, it's freakin' July. Where did this year go?? I've been updating here and there. You know the drill. You can check out my latest updates below to find out more. (Updated 8-3-11)

1) A Quick Update! I just got a new website program, so it'll will take me some time (possibly a lot of time) to figure out all the new bells and whistles, so updating and having pages work correctly will probably be slower than usual. Sorry, but it wasn't my choice. You can thank Microsoft for doing away with my old program. Bastards!!!

1)  Hey, Hey! It's time for some update info. I've been working all over this place. Below I've put up a new rant about how "Scream 4" went from high profile sequel to flop of the year!

2) Now, let's talk TV. My reviews of the current TV season are up in the Films and TV section. You can click here → TV Report Card 2010 to see what's worth seeing on TV. And I'll be adding updates and new shows throughout the TV season.

3) I've also added new pics in the Photo Gallery. So go over there and check out the pics from my Trip to Florida.

4) Over on my Opinion page I've been updating "American Idol" every week. But the show's over, so who cares? I might move a rant or two over to that section, once I master this new website program.

5) Finally, as always, I'm continually updating my Movie Hotlist (below). I am a few movies behind, but there's still a lot of stuff there.

And, as always, there's a couple years worth of junk to keep you busy in the Archives. So click around and see what's what!!

   Thanks For Stopping By!

I'm just glad to see that you've read this far!! Thanks!! But don't stop now!!

LOOKING GOOD
These shows will almost certainly be back next season, but their networks have yet to officially renew them.

Big Brother (CBS) .. Should be back.

NCIS: Los Angeles (CBS) ... CBS is into successful spin-offs. Should return, no problemo.
Secret Millionaire (ABC) ... A cheap-to-produce reality show that brings in 10-million-plus viewers? Should be back in some form.

ON THE BUBBLE
These shows currently exist in that murky, nebulous realm where they could go either way.

The Apprentice (NBC) ... Thanks to some renewed energy that comes courtesy of Gary Busey, renewal is a strong possibility.
Breakout Kings (A&E) ... No word yet on this.
CSI: NY (CBS) ... This is the only question mark in the CSI family, but until we hear otherwise, we're assuming it'll be back.
Eastbound & Down (HBO) ... The upcoming third season is expected to be its last.
Flashpoint (CBS) ... Airing this summer.
Kitchen Nightmares (Fox) ... Probably coming back.
Make it or Break It (ABC Family) ... Currently in its second season. Too early to tell!
Merlin (Syfy) ... Production on the next season of the U.K.-made series is underway, so Syfy will likely pick it up.
Million Dollar Money Drop (Fox) ... Another easily salvageable reality game show. Could go either way, and Fox won't be in a hurry to make a decision.
Penn & Teller: Bullsh*t (Showtime) ... Future is uncertain, may move to new network.
Rules of Engagement (CBS) ... This one always manages to survive, despite being on the bubble every year. We think the same thing will happen again this year.

NOT LOOKING GOOD
None of these shows have officially been canceled yet, but they're long shots to return. Networks will announce the fates of most of these shows in May.

America's Next Great Restaurant (NBC) ... Its first season isn't impressing anyone, even by NBC standards. You can probably stick a fork in it.
Chaos (CBS) ... Pulled from CBS' schedule after just three episodes. Likelihood of returning is about as close to zero as you can get.
Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior (CBS) ... Lots of trouble right out of the gate. Future is uncertain.
Shedding For the Wedding (The CW) ... Off to a bad start. Not sure The CW would want this back.

CANCELED/ENDING
These shows have either been axed by their networks or decided to ride off into the sunset on their own.

Better With You (ABC) ... Canceled.
Big Love (HBO) ... Just finished its fifth and final season.
Breaking In (Fox) ... Is it the Christian Slater curse or the Bret Harrison curse?
Brothers & Sisters (ABC) ... Was rumored to be coming back, but it just didn't happen.
The Cape (NBC) ... One of the season's biggest flops.
Caprica (Syfy) ... Canceled-prica.
Chase (NBC) ... After initially giving this procedural a full-season pickup, NBC woke up and pulled it from the schedule. Not coming back.
The Chicago Code (Fox) ... Just didn't have the viewership to keep going.
The Closer (TNT) ... Final season premieres July 14. TNT is currently working on a possible spin-off.
The Defenders (CBS) ... Jim Belushi is available, guys!

Entourage (HBO) ... The upcoming eighth season will be its last.

Friday Night Lights (DirecTV/NBC) ... Final season already aired on DirecTV, will begin airing on NBC in April.
Glory Daze (TBS) ... Canceled after one season.
The Good Guys (Fox) ... Hope you already said your goodbyes to the Good Guys, because this one is long gone.
Hellcats (The CW) ... Well, we got this one wrong. Canceled.
Human Target (Fox) ... On the wrong side of the bubble after escaping cancellation last year.
In Treatment (HBO) ... Canceled, but its storylines could continue in "a new format."
Law & Order: Criminal Intent (USA) ... Final season begins in May.
Law & Order: Los Angeles (NBC) ... DONE-DONE.
Lie to Me (Fox) ... Truthfully? This really didn't stand a chance.
Life Unexpected (CW) ... It should be noted that The CW hasn't officially canceled the program, but showrunner Liz Tigelaar has said that it won't be coming back and several cast members have moved on to other projects, including Britt Robertson to the high-profile Secret Circle.
Lights Out (FX) ... Canceled after just one season.
Live to Dance (CBS) ... Let's just say Paula Abdul won't be happy.
Lone Star (Fox) ... Canceled last fall, just two episodes into its short life.
Mad Love (CBS) ... No love for Mad Love.
Medium (CBS) ... This one is already gone, dude.
Mr. Sunshine (ABC) ... Mr. Sunshine, Meet Mrs. Darkness.
No Ordinary Family (ABC) ... These TV heroes were powerless against ruthless TV execs.
Off the Map (ABC) ... Now it's waaayyyyyyy off the map. These things just write themselves!
One Life To Live (ABC) ... This show only got 10,000 episodes! Give it time to develop!
Outsourced (NBC) ... Its departure opens the door for a new "non-racist racist comedy."
The Paul Reiser Show (NBC) ... You barely even gave him a chance.
Perfect Couples (NBC) ... Pulled to make room for The Paul Reiser Show. Canceled.
Rescue Me (FX) ... Airing its final season this summer.
Running Wilde (Fox) ... A massive disappointment that ended in cancellation.
Secret Diary of a Call Girl (Showtime) ... Just debuted its fourth and final season. Won't be back.
$#*! My Dad Says (CBS) ... @%$&ing canceled.
Smallville (The CW) ... The tenth and final season ends in May. Won't be back.
Stargate Universe (Syfy) ... Canceled. But at least Face Off was renewed! Right?
Terriers (FX) ... Don't even get us started.
Traffic Light (Fox) ... Red means stop.
V (ABC) ... We'll miss you, Queen Anna.

Did you find your favorites?? Was it good or bad news??

Normally, I'd put this in my Opinion section, but I'm busy with my "American Idol" reviews over there.  So here's a new rant:

What Went Wrong With "Scream 4"?

Every film has certain hurdles it has to get over to make it from script to movie to box office hit.  Most will make mistakes that trip them up along the way. But every so often a film comes along that seems to make EVERY mistake possible and ends up as a big flop. That's basically what's happened to "Scream 4", which appeared to be a sure fire box office hit, but stumbled out of the gate to a mediocre opening followed by a quick drop-off. Here's my take on what went wrong.

The "Scream" franchise has been my favorite all-time horror series. I loved the way it skewered the popular horror clichés and did it with a solid cast and smart writing. And when I heard that they were planning another trilogy of films, I was thrilled! All of the original cast were on board, along with the original writer (Kevin Williamson) and director (Wes Craven). But my excitement would be cut short almost immediately.

Let's start with the script. As soon as the film started shooting, rumors started to fly that the script wasn't even completed and that they were finishing it while they were shooting. This is Strike One! Even if the film had turned out great, the rumor of script problems and an unfinished script is big news in the movie geek world. And they know that this usually means that the film will be bad, so they'll be the first to stay away. And this is bad, because if a movie has a fan following, the last people you want to alienate are the die hard fans. The unfinished script led to cast changes with a couple actresses dropping out, because their roles were minimized, so they had to be replaced. This pretty much sealed the deal for fans that the film was having script problems.

I know that hindsight is 20/20, but it seems as if the release date was a big problem. The film was slated to open the week before Easter and I think that Dimension films figured that "Scream 4" would be good counter-programming to all of the family films that would be playing over the Easter holiday and probably expected all the kids that were out of school for Spring Break to attend the film, even though, it's R-rated. But that didn't happen. Normally, I think an average horror film draws about 75% under 25 years old and a mostly male audience. But, according to exiting polls, "Scream 4" drew almost 50% over 25 years old and 52% of the audience were female. I'm sure they were also hoping that the film would continue to play into the lucrative Summer Movie Season, which begins in about 10 days, but that probably won't happen either, since the film looks to have maybe one more decent weekend in its future.

But how about the movie itself? Personally, I liked the film, but I had some problems with it, too. This franchise is known for making fun of popular horror film clichés and in the 11 years since "Scream 3" was released, we've seen a slew of changes to the horror genre. We've went from the splatter porn horror films, like the "Saw" series, to more cerebral horror films, like the "Paranormal Activity" films, to a new slate of reboots of popular horror series, like "Friday the 13th" and "A Nightmare On Elm Street". But "Scream 4" does little to tackle these new twists. There's a bit about the internet and the film keeps talking about "reboots", but it never really tackles these subjects as its main themes. Actually, I was kind of surprised how close the film stays to the original trilogy. The pacing,  the characters and the storyline stay very close to the original films. I think this is what kept the under 25 crowd away. "Scream 4" works best if you've seen the original trilogy, because it uses a lot of in-jokes and it continues the movie within a movie premise from Part 3. I think this alienated most of the movie audience under 30.

One of the problems I had with the film was in its casting. It seemed like they were trying to get every "It" girl of the moment into the film, which seemed a little desperate. I also didn't like the casting of Emma Roberts as the new central character of the film. I like Emma, but I don't think she's a very good actress. And I was right. In real life, Emma is all of 5 feet tall and about 80 pounds and I think her stature definitely makes her less credible for the more physical scenes in the movie. And her squeaky, whiny voice is really detrimental at the end of the film when she's suppose to be tough. But, after seeing the film, I understand why Wes Craven or possibly Kevin Williamson wanted her in the film. They actually lampoon her at one point in the film, which is one of the things this series does on a regular basis, but it also wasn't necessary in this film. And this miscasting represents the most notable flaw in the film, which is the ending. You want people leaving the theater feeling uplifted by a solid or surprising ending, but "Scream 4" devolves into an extended, corny ending. It makes me wonder if this wasn't the part of the film that they were still writing when production began.

And this brings me back to the writing. While the film does stay very close to the previous "Scream" films, that also makes it feel like a 90's horror film and not a 2011 horror film. The script had to be focused on what it was going to parody and it needed to decide which characters were the most to develop for this sequel. And I think all of the new characters are underdeveloped. I liked the character of Kirby (Hayden Panettiere) who seemed like a real original character, but she was only in a few scenes. That was an opportunity to develop a new interesting character, but they dropped the ball. Also, I think the film goes one scene too far. I could kind of get the first ending of the film, but it goes on to a second ending, which sends it over the top and makes it feel a little cartoonish. Kevin Williamson has shown to be a strong, competent writer, based on the first two "Scream" movies, but this ending doesn't hold up to those movies or even the first half of this film.

All of this contributed to "Scream 4"'s weak opening. The film was expected to make $30-$40 million, but opened to a mediocre $18.8 million. This lead the naysayers and "Scream" haters to jump all over the film. They spread all over the net, reporting that the film was a huge flop. And it seemed to work. "Scream 4" lost nearly 70% of its box office the next two weekends. It was like the film had the swine flu and no one wanted to get anywhere near it.

But were the naysayers really right about this film? Actually, "No!". According to fans, who have claimed to have seen "Scream 4", they've rated it the second best film in the series, trailing the original "Scream". Critics haven't been quite as kind. Critics put "Scream 4" ahead of "Scream 3", but trailing the first two "Scream" movies. But the reviews are interesting. Most of the reviews say the same thing, the film has some good and clever moments, but it has some problems, too. It seems to be a very thin line with this film. According to Rotten Tomatoes.com, 56% of critics gave the film a positive review, while 44% gave it a thumbs down. But what's interesting is that the positive and negative reviews seem to say pretty much the same thing. So I think that the critics were more on the fence with this one. But the moviegoers that actually saw the film seem to be pretty positive on this sequel.

There are some other factors that may or may not have contributed to the film's demise. One person claimed that a copy of "Scream 4" had been posted on YouTube, so people were watching it online for free (I wasn't able to verify that, though). Other people claimed to have seen teenagers buying tickets for PG rated films and sneaking into the R rated "Scream 4". Both of these things could've contributed to the lackluster opening weekend. Other people think that the under 25 crowd didn't know what the "Scream" films were and weren't familiar with the original cast, who haven't been in the limelight in recent years. According to a poll on Box Office Mojo, the top 3 reasons that fan think the film failed were, the 11 year gap between movies, the release date and the fact that the film didn't appear to offer any new hooks or twists to the series. Everyone seems to have a theory and there seems to be a lot of them.

So, in the end, it was almost like a perfect storm of things that led to the quick demise of this popular franchise. The script problems, the questionable casting, the lousy release date and over-estimating its appeal to a younger demographic all contributed to the downfall of this popular series.

But that doesn't mean I'd rule this series out yet. There are many things they could do to make "Scream 5" a success. Learning from all of these mistakes would be Step One. It also helps that "Scream 4" is doing better overseas. There's a good chance "Scream 4" will end up with a $100 million worldwide gross. And after DVD sales, video and internet rentals and cable and television rights, the film should make a tidy profit. And that's always the first step in greenlighting a sequel.

I don't want this rant to sound completely negative. I did give the film a positive review and I do think the makers of this series have the ability to finish this new trilogy with two more good "Scream" films. I also think that this series is always so well done that it's head and shoulders above most of the other horror films out there, even when it's not a perfect sequel, it's better than most of the rest. It also looks doubtful that Emma Roberts will be back for a sequel. So there are definitely some positive things going forward.

Oscars 2011

It's that time of the year again! It's Oscar Time! And I have plenty to say about this annual miscarriage of cinematic justice! In a perfect world, here's how things should've worked out...

Category The Winners Who Should've Won
Best Picture The King's Speech Toy Story 3 - It was the critics fave, fan fave and Top Film at the box office. It was THE movie of 2010!

Best Director Tom Hooper - The King's Speech Darren Aronofsky - Black Swan - It's the one movie where direction was a pivotal part of the film's success.

Best Actor Colin Firth - The King's Speech Colin Firth - The King's Speech - In terms of nominees, he gave a brilliant technical performance. But for me, non-nominee Michael Douglas gave the best performance in "Solitary Man".

Best Actress Natalie Portman - Black Swan
Natalie Portman - Black Swan - It was her year!

Best Supporting Actor Christian Bale - The Fighter Christian Bale - The Fighter - Hands down, the closest race of them all. I give the edge to Bale, but Mark Ruffalo, Geoffrey Rush and Jeremy Renner (in that order) were all good!

Best Supporting Actress Melissa Leo - The Fighter Hailee Steinfeld - True Grit - Her performance was solid and unique, but after seeing her in interviews, she's about as far away from her character as you can get, which makes it even more impressive.

And it wouldn't be my annual Oscar rant without my take on the Best and Worst Oscar fashions.

I was expecting this year to be a tough year in fashion at the Oscars, because so many past Best Dressed contenders were going to be returning for this year's show, so I thought it might be hard to pick one favorite. But it didn't take long for me to find a favorite. And it was the biggest surprise of the night, because it came from a complete dark horse. It came from a lady who has only made one film AND was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role. Hailee Steinfeld stole all the attention on the red carpet and was my hands down pick for Best Dressed of 2011 at the Oscars! Too bad she couldn't have taken home that Best Supporting Actress Oscar, too!!

Best Dressed

#1. Hailee Steinfeld

Watching her on the Oscar telecast, she was perfect! The hair was perfect, the dress was age-appropriate and her smile was stunning.
Basically, she looked like a princess! She looked beautiful and she was my favorite at this year's show.

#2. Mila Kunis

Mila looked really great on Oscar night. I don't know if this look would've finished as high on my list, if it weren't for
one detail. Mila had the best accessories of the night. Her breasts! You may not be able to tell it here, but during her
trip down the red carpet and her appearance on the show, the breasts peeking out of the top of her dress added serious
sex appeal to her look and it also added the possibility that they were going to pop out at any moment. They didn't!

#3. Anne Hathaway

For me, this was probably the best dress of the night. It looked great on the show. But since I'm judging the
red carpet looks, this one doesn't completely count. It's also not fair that, as an Oscar host, Anne had about
20 dress changes over the course of the night.

Here's Anne with her red carpet dress that looks a little bit like a prom dress. It wouldn't make my Best Dressed list on its own right.

BUT! I thought that Anne did a great job hosting and she rocked some of the dresses she wore during the show. You can see her having a little fun
with the dress above. And she looked fabulous throughout the night.

#4. Reese Witherspoon

I liked Reese's look on Oscar night. But I have to admit that as I was assembling this list, her look has been growing on me. If I had taken
any longer assembling this list, she might have made it up to 2nd place. That's why I couldn't help but include this lovely picture of Reese
all smiles. I like the hair, too! I think she looks absolutely gorgeous!!

#5. Natalie Portman

Preggers or not, Natalie looked good! And there's no doubt she was the Best Actress of the Year. So it's only fitting
that she gets a spot on my Best Dressed list. And it's not a first. She topped my Best Dressed List in 2009. You can see
those pics if you follow the Archives link below back to the Spring of 2009. Congrats, Nat!

Honorable Mention:

I decided to throw in these two ladies who both looked nice, but may have played it a little safe. Sandra looked nice in red. That bustier
top is a little bit sexy. I really like the dark blue color and sparkle of Amy's dress, too!

Worst Dressed :

Now it's time to rank on the ladies that just missed the fashion boat this Oscar season.

Worst Hair goes to Mandy Moore! I looked for the best angle to demonstrate my point, but there was
no good angle. She looks like she hasn't washed her hair all week and just decided to pull it all back,
so no one would notice. Also, the coloring doesn't go with her fair skin or light colored dress! And some
how it actually makes her look about ten years older than she is! It's just bad all the way around.

But let's not forget the dress. I can' t decide if Virginia made this dress out of leftover rug samples or
if she used those plastic party supplies?? Either way, it was one of the night's eyesores! And let's not
forget how unclassy 30 year old arm tattoos are on the red carpet. It might be hard to see here, but
trust me, she's sporting a tattoo on her left arm that just makes the whole thing look really tacky!

I don't think these pics look that terrible and they may not capture how she looked on the red carpet on Oscar night.
But I think a dress like this needs to be worn by someone with some natural curves. This dress needs a little shape to
it and with Gwyneth's flat ass and small breasts, she looked like a golden bullet on the red carpet during the Oscars.

And Finally....

This year's question mark decision goes to Best Actress nominee Jennifer Lawrence! I think she
looks great in this dress. And this is probably the best I've seen her look, not that I've seen a lot
of her. But this dress is more sexy, bombshell and less classy, Oscar gown! It's a great dress. It's
just the wrong event for it. So she didn't make my Best Dressed or Worst Dressed list.
