Since the day, many years ago, a
brave man stepped in and filled Ronald’s shoes, we have celebrated the
volunteer efforts of someone who has gone beyond the normal day to day “honey
do list.” Thus, we give the “Ronald Award.”
In
1994 this volunteer was spotted doing many of the things they do today –
talking with families in the kitchen, asking the staff about someone they met
the week before, or providing some true “skilled” volunteer work.
Have you ever wondered where lamps
go when they die? They go to this volunteer’s workshop and come back to life!
Have you ever wondered who takes
care of trimming the trees and shrubs (the ones we used to have in the Ronald
House yard!); who gives a more manicured look to the front and back lawn; or who
loads up bag after icky bag of soda cans to be recycled? This volunteer knows.
Have you thought about the angel
babies whose parents can’t afford to buy a casket for the funeral? This
volunteer has.
This volunteer shares time with
the Ronald McDonald House and several more groups, but could not be more
cherished than by the Ronald McDonald House staff that depend greatly upon his
expertise. If 10:30 am rolls around on Wednesday and there has not been a Dan
sighting, we start asking questions.
Dan, we thank you for everything
you have meant to the Ronald McDonald House and for enabling us to provide a
wonderful “home – away – from – home” for families.
What do volunteers do?
Answer phones, empty dishwashers, mop floors,
change light bulbs, fold linens, take out the trash, clean the kitchen, make
brownies, cakes and dinners, work in the yard, help with special events... and
in general, make the house run smoothly!
Without them... The Ronald McDonald House wouldn't be a home.
