VARIATIONS IN THE RASCALS' RECORDINGS

In the 1960's, many people owned phonographs that could only play monophonic recordings, while others owned stereophonic record players.
Records in one format were sometimes incompatible with the equipment designed for the other format.  For this reason, LPs were often issued in both formats, so that no one would be excluded.

Singles, on the other hand, were typically only issued in mono (most singles buyers were teenagers, and unlikely to have the more expensive stereophonic equipment.)  By 1968, however, most records were issued in stereo only.

In the case of the Rascals' recordings, their first four albums were released in both mono and stereo, while songs appearing on singles were issued in one format only.
(See the Discography page for details on the format of each release.)

Because a separate mixdown was required for mono and for stereo, there are occasionally subtle (or noticable) differences among the versions released in each format.
In a few cases, the single mix is a third different mix from the mono and stereo mixes for the album release.

The songs released in more than one format are listed below in alphabetical order.  (Notes: 1. I have not included any mention of titles re-issued in later anthologies unless the re-issued version has a unique mix. 2. All serial numbers refer to Atlantic records unless indicated otherwise.)

I am indebted to Don Holmes, who contributed much of the information contained in this page.
