Making the decision to have a litter of puppies is not a decision to be taken lightly. There is much involved in choosing a male/female worthy of being called "Show/Breedable". First thing to consider is if this "future breeding prospect" is of good enough quality to breed. Let's take a look at what type of things to look for when choosing a Mi-Ki for breeding. (I have done this in a checklist form, that you may use this when choosing your future breeding stock): _____Does this breeding prospect have good conformation? Having an excellent pedigree of several Mi-Kis in the first 2 to 3 generations meeting CORRECT breed type and having passed the appropriate health checks, with results that would deem him/her "Breedable Quality"? ____(If A female) Is she large enough to potentially deliver a litter naturally? (The IMR & CMA does not suggest breeding a female that is less than 4 pounds.) Females under 4 pounds often do not have a large enough pelvis to deliver puppies naturally through the birth canal. If you are concerned about your female's small body frame, consult your veterinarian prior to your female coming into season in order to know if she can deliver naturally or if she will need a c-section. Weight Estimator: 2 months triple weight, 3 months double weight. (This is accurate within a pound either way) _____Ask the breeder if the Dam free whelps (natural delivery) her litters and if she has ever required a c-section. It is very common for the daughters to take after their mother's birth pattern. (Although this may not always be the case) In addition you must consider his/her overall qualities: _____Does this breeding prospect conform to the Official Mi-Ki Standard? Faults? ________________________________________________ _____ Does his/her Sire & Dam conform to the Official Mi-Ki Standard? What are their faults _____________________________________ _____Is he/she DNA'd? Z # _____ _____Are his/her Sire & Dam DNA'd? Sire Z # _____ Dam Z #_____ _____Are his/her patella's sound? Were his/her patella's checked by a qualified veterinarian after 12 mo of age? Patella Score ______________ _____Have his/her Sire & Dam been Patella checked as adults? _____Parent's Patella Results? Sire ___________ Dam____________ _____Have his/her eye's been CERF tested by a certified ophthalmologist within the last year? Results: Normal_______ Failed:___________ _____If Failed CERF test explain:____________________________________ _____Have his/her sire and Dam been Cerf tested in the past year? _____Parent's CERF Results: Sire:____________ Dam:_______________ _____Does he/she have a correct bite (level to slight undershot)? _____Is his/her heart cleared of defects and in perfect condition, having been examined by a licensed Cardiologist_______ Or a local Veternarian______within the past year? Have both the sire and dam of this breeding prospect also been heart cleared, having been examined by a licensed Cardiologist_______ Or a local Veternarian______within the past year? _____Does he/she have a correct muzzle type ( of the length of the head from the base of the skull to the stop)? A muzzle longer or a pointed muzzle is a fault. _____Does he/she have the correct head type? (Slightly rounded with a 90 degree stop) _____Does he/she have a sweet outgoing temperament? _____What are his/her Sire & Dam temperament(s)? ____________________ _____Do you know if his/her lineages carry any genetic health problems? Known/Suspected Genetic Lineage:__________________________________ _____Are all puppies born in this litter still living and in good health? If any deceased, please explain cause of death or euthanasia?______________ _______________________________________________________________ _____Were there any pups born with a cleft pallet in this litter? _____If yes, was this/these pup(s) of normal birth size and otherwise fully developed? ______Normal Size _____ Not Normal- Explain: ___________ ______________________________________________________________ _____Are there any males in this litter with only one or no descended testicals? _____Is the sire or dam a carrier of the cryptorchid gene? _____Sire _____Dam Major faults that would disqualify a Mi-Ki as a breeder: _____Failed CERF exam. _____Any heart defect hereditary or congenital that may be an issue during breeding, pregnancy or whelping. _____Patella luxation greater than a grade II. (Normal is preferred) Note: When choosing to breed a male or female that does not have a Normal patella score, there should be noted continual progress in their litters Patella scores. When progress is not seen, re-evaluation of your male or female may be necessary. _____Any known hereditary defect not listed. _____ Inguinal Hernia _____Open Fontanel _____Male with only one or no descended testicals. _____Female deemed to small to safely carry or whelp a litter. No dog is ever going to be perfect. When choosing a Mi-Ki for breeding. Look for one as close to these guidelines as possible. If your Mi-Ki only has a few minor faults, it is important to look for a stud dog/female that does not have those same faults. If your Mi-Ki has any health problems or has a family genetic history of health problems he/she could pass those genes onto his/her puppies. As breeder(s) the future of the Mi-Ki breed is in our hands. Choose your breeding Mi-Kis carefully and responsibly. k#$ 5z@@@@, )5 5??Arial ``"Choosing A Quality Breeding Prospect" Written By: Raeann Ralston Of Shekinah's Mi-Kis 11/04k#$Ԇ@Ɠ@&??Arial 2005 Shekinah's Mi-Kisk.)z breedstandard My Homepage. wb. images\bgimage.jpg#h\i@F@p ku4 2 222@:~email@provider.comwww.coffeecup.com/sales'9Arial@Directory HOME @#h\u@L@%sku4 2 222@:~email@provider.com$www.angelfire.com/mi4/cma/index.html'9Arial@2Read: Choosing A Quality Breeding Prospect @#h\@N@t=ku4 2 222@:~email@provider.com$www.angelfire.com/mi4/cma/index.html'9Arial@CMA Web Site @#h\@H@gqku4 2 222@:~email@provider.comwww.coffeecup.com/sales'9Arial@BACK @#$/\({@@pB/\??Arial Arial Arial Arial +9J#'w}c g D J i q +? Bad temper and meanness are not to be tolerated and are to be severely penalized as to ..remove the dog from competition. ..*5. More than 10 inches in height at the shoulder. ..*6. Any dog, lame, limping, deaf or blind. GENERAL APPEARANCE OF THE MI-KI The Mi-Ki should give the appearance of a small well-balanced dog, light in bone, non-course, with winged ears and a long flowing coat topped by a full plumbed tail. The intelligence is notable in the Mi-Ki's alert, yet calm, expression. The Mi-Ki is truly an elegant dog, with a graceful, stylish bearing. MI-KI'S MUZZLE Explanation of the Muzzle: Being a recent breed, the continuity of type is not yet thoroughly established, but measurably on its way with a good number of dogs having the desired type. Through a well-structured and responsible breeding practice, the CMA is helping its breeders to attain the ideal type. As the CMA Standard reads . . The muzzle should be no longer than 1/4 of the length of the head from the base of the skull to the stop. To measure correctly use a soft measuring tape. It should be pressed to the skull, not loose or you may get the wrong measurement. For Example: The dogs measurement is 4 inches from the base of the skull to the stop. Then 1/4 of the 4 inches would be1 inch for that muzzle length. Now measure from the "stop" to the "tip of the nose" that Mi-Kis perfect muzzle length would be 1 inch. To view a picture of the measurement refer the Guide to Measuring Your Mi-Ki. The shape of the muzzle should be square with no wrinkles. The stop (region where muzzle joins the skull) should be well defined at a 90-degree angle. An even or slightly undershot bite is most desirable, but most definitely not overshot. 1) An example of a short muzzle, which gives a pushed in look. Sometimes, dogs with this muzzle length have a pronounced under bite and/or the typical wrinkle as found in the Japanese Chin. There is a tendency of a compromised respiratory ability with the very short muzzle dog, especially as the dog ages. This type of dog should not be bred to a dog of the same conformation, but to a dog with a medium length muzzle. 2) An example of the most desirable muzzle length. Dogs with a medium length muzzle usually have a bite that is even to slightly undershot. If this type of dog's under bite in the excessive range, it should be bred to a dog with the same medium length muzzle, but with an even bite, definitely not to a dog of similar bite. k#$X{@@:G Q??Arial $$ 2005 Continental Mi-Ki Associationk
