St John Nepmucene(1811-1860)
St. John's feast day is March 20th. John was born in Bohemia on March 20, 1811. His father was a german who owned a stocking factory and his mother was a Czech. John studied for the priesthood at Charles Ferdinand University in Bohemia. Later on he traveled to America to be ordained by Bishop Dubois in 1836, as Bishop of New York. In 1840, while serving in New York, John joined the Redemptorists (Most Holy Redeemer). After this he worked in Ohi0 and then Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. For eight (8) years, he was a pastor, missionary, and parish priest in both Pittsburgh and Baltimore, Maryland.
By age fifteen (15) John was Bishop of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. John saw to the building of 100 churches and 80 schools, which were funded by a unified diocesan school system. John Neumann also wrote catachisms. By age 49, John died of a stroke on January 5, 1860. On June 19, 1977 John was canonized as a saint by Pope John Paul VI.
