The Meaning of the Name Patten:
The name has been spelled Patten, Peyton (Irish), Patton, Pattin, Paton (Scottish), Paidein (Gaelic)
The Ancestry.com website stated that Patten means "the seller of clogs." As in Middle English, Patin meant "clog." In The Surnames of Scotland, it states that the name was from Pat, a diminutive of Patrick. The French diminutive suffix was "on." While The Dictionary of American Names states that, in England, the name meant "one who came from Patton (in Shropshire and Westmoreland).
The Patten Arms:
An arms was recorded for John Patten, a crusader, in 1376. It was described as bore, lozengy ermine and sable, a canton gules, in France - in Shirley [Foster, p. 154].

The First Recorded Patten
One of the first records of the Patten name was a Geoffry Patin in Normandy in 1198 (MSR) and Alice Patun, in England in 1274 (RH)[The Norman People].
WILSON-PATTEN of Bank Hall:
Burke's Peerage states that "the family of Patten claims ancestry coeval[of the same age or era] with the Norman Conquest, but they did not settle in Lancashire until the reign of Henry VIII."
The early line is rather sketchy:
1. Richard Patten was alive in 1119. He was said to be the heir of his father, Richard Patten or Patine, of Patton House. Patton house was located near Chelmsford, Essex County, England. Richard Patten, Sr. was married into the ancient house of Eyre.
2. Richard Patten, of Patten House, in Essex County, England married Mary Dagenham of Dagenham Court.
Richard and Mary Patten had three sons: Richard, Robert, and John.
.....Their eldest son, Richard lived in the time of Henry III.
3. John Patten of Dagenham Court, Essex County, England; and Waynflete County Lincoln, lived during the reign of Edward III, and was alive in 1376 [see him under "The Patten Arms"]. John married the daughter of Sir Oswald Westingcroft of Westingcroft manor in Lancashire, England. John's son was Nicholas Patten. It is in this generation that we find more details about this family.
4. Nicholas Patten alias Waynflete, the heir of John Patten, lived in the reign of Henry V and Henry VI. Nicolas married Margery Brereton, the daughter of Sir William Brereton, Knight of Brereton in Chesire, England. Their sons were: A. Willian Patten alias Waynflete. He founded Magdalene College in Oxford, England. Nicholas Patten died August 11, 1486. Their heir was Richard Patten.
5. Richard Patten of Boslow, Derby County, England; in the time of Henry VI. His heir was Humphrey Patten of Warrington County, England.
6. Humphrey Patten was alive during the Reign of Henry [Tudor] VIII. He married Jane Rixtone, the daughter of Thomas Rixtone, Gentleman of Great Sankey.
7. Thomas Patten of Patten Lane, in Warrington, England, was born in 1561. His wife was Ellen Diggles. Her father was George Diggles. Ellen and Thomas Patten had four sons: Thomas Patten was the heir. His brothers were:

8. Thomas Patten married Mary, the daughter of John Leigh Esq. of Oughtrington in Chesire, England. Thomas and Mary had children:

9. Thomas Patten married Margaret, the eldest daughter of Jonathan Blackburne, Esq. of Orford Co., Lancaster.
10. Thomas Patten, Esq., Lord of Winmarleigh, Lancaster, England. Thomas was born on June 16, 1728. He married Lettice Peake, daughter of Rev. James Peake of Bowden County, Cheshire, England.

Crest of the English Patten Family
Their crests were:
1. Pattern English: the griffin's head erased, vert. Motto: Nulla pallescere culpa to turn pale at no crime[Fairbairn, James].
2. Wilson: the demi-wolf, rampant. Motto: Virtus ad sidera tollit for Wilson[Fairbairn, James].
The Scottish Patterns:
In C.L. Patton's book Coming to America, A Chronicle of the American Lineage of the Pattons published in Springfield, Illinois. It stated that the Pattens were from the Scottish Highlands and Lowlands near Loch Linnhe. They were Presbyterians and were sent to Ireland by King James I of England. They settled in Ulster. This is confirmed in The Book of Irish Families Great and Small. Volume 1, Second edition. Irish Genealogical Foundation, 1997. In this book in states under Patten, Patton [Pattin]:
"The name of a family from Scotland which settled in Ireland, in the province of Ulster ... The 1890 birth index finds the family most numerous in Antrim and Down when spelled as Patton, and in Mayo when spelled as Patten."
Pattens who came into the American colonies around 1718 from Londonderry in the north of Ireland are described as follows:
Actor Patten of Maine (1691-1780) was born in Dunboe, Londonderry, Ireland. Actor Patten died in 1780 in Hancock, Maine. He married Pauline Suter of Suter, Dunhoe, Londonderry, Ireland.
