...

Left: The Farquharson Plaid ... Right: The Farquharson of Invercauld Coat of arms

Farquharson is a division of the Clan Chattan. They were descended from the Shah of Rothiemurcus in Strathspey, who was lineally descended from the ancient Thanes of Fife.

Fearchar/Farquhar, son of Shah/Alexander Shaw, lived in the reign of Robert II and III (the 15th c.), he married the daughter of Patrick Mac Dhoncha, ancestor of the Robertsons of Lude. Patrick's son, Donald, married a Robertson of the Calveen family. Donald's successor, Feachar, married Chisholm of Strathglas. Donald's grandson was Fiunnla mor.

The clan owned property in Aberdeen and Perthshire, and upwards of 100,000 acres of fir woods, and the remains of Sylva Caledonia.

The Aberdeen descendants of the clan called themselves Farquharson, and were prominent members of the Clan Chattan. "Farquhar's son, Donald, married Isobel Stewart of Invercauld, from whom the Farquharsons of Invercauld descended.

The Farquharsons of Braemar, Invercauld, and Inverey supported the rising in 1715, and Frances Farquharson of Monaltrie commanded the three hundred Farquharson who were in the center of the Jacobite front line at the Battle of Culloden in 1746, though the most notable Farquharson supporter of the 1746 Rebellion was a woman. Anne Farquharson of Invercauld, 20 years old and known as "Colonel Anne" or "La Belle Rebelle,' was the wife of the chief of Clan Macintosh, who supported the Government. She raised and personally inspected a contingent of the clan to fight on the other side, and in February 1746 entertained Bonnie Prince Charlie and organized a blacksmith and four of her servants to oppose and divert an attack on her house designed to capture him" (Fulton, Alexander. Clans and Families of Scotland: The History of the Scottish Tartan. Edison, N.J.: Chartwell Books, 1991).

Helen G. Farquarson was the second wife of Ludovich William Clark, They were married in the parish of Fordyce on Novemeber 24, 1864 at Dunn House. Helen was 24 years old at this time, and was the daughter of James Farquarson and Ann Stewart.
