What is truly amazing about the class of 1949 is not just its great athletic teams or The Cardinal Marching Band but the fact that 1949 classmates, over the many years, still come together displaying a Cardinal loyalty and a camaraderie that is unmatched

CHS HALL OF FAME

The following 1949 classmates were elected the CHS Hall of Fame:

Carl Lewis - Max McConnell - Marv Rosenberg - Don Smith - Eugene Sowles 

 

Basketball

 

The 1949 Cardinal Basketball Team were Twin-Valley Conference Champions, District, Regional Champs and finally, State Champions!

The starting Five were Co-Captains and Seniors LeRoy Cox and Eugene Sowles, juniors Rex Corless, Gene Fry and Jim Rhodes  -  alternating with Rhodes at forward was Senior Max McConnell.  Off the bench and getting playing time were Seniors Harry Cooper, Tom Engle, Larry Porter, Marv Rosenberg, and Fred Weeks.  Juniors Bernard Hoogenboom and Bob Simmons.  Coaches:  Head Coach Floyd Eby and Assistant Coaches Bert Grigg and Bob Livermore.  This is the team that brought CHS the first State Championship in its history.  Their record was 21 wins and 2 losses.  LeRoy Cox and junior Rex Corless were named to the All-Conference Team, while Eugene Sowles was placed on the second team and junior Gene Fry honorable mention.

Football

The 1949 Football Team were Co-Champions of the Twin-Valley Conference with 6 wins and 2 losses.

Eighteen Seniors played on the Varsity: LeRoy Cox, Max McConnell, Don Smith, Marv Rosenberg, Keith Weage, John Odren, Fred Weeks, Eugene Sowles, Carl Lewis, Ken McDonald, Harry Cooper, Tom Engle, Clyde "Tim" Trumbull, John Burtch, Lawrence Porter, Sylvester "Fred" Frederick, Kenwood Drayton, John Yope.  Coaches: Head Coach Floyd Eby and Assistant Coach Bob Livermore.  Senior Reserves: Bud Harvey,  Rich Hill & Lee Pfost.  Seniors Don Smith, LeRoy Cox, John Odren and Carl Lewis were named to the Twin-Valley All-Conference Team.  Max McConnell was named to the second team and Eugene Sowles and Marv Rosenberg were honorable mention.  Don Smith was named to the Michigan All-State Team.

 

Baseball

The 1949 Baseball Team were Co-Champions of the Twin-Valley Conference with 5 wins and 3 losses.

Six seniors were on the Conference Co-Champion Baseball team.  Catcher Marvin Rosenberg, 1st Baseman Jack Woods, 3rd Baseman Gene Sowles, Catcher Carl Lewis, Outfielders Lawrence Porter and John Yope.

Several Seniors participated on these sports teams.  Of these, Eugene Sowles won the State half mile track meet.  Our Cheerleaders deserve special mention because they were there through thick and thin in every single game.  Our lone senior Cheerleader was Joan Donkin.  She was ably assisted by juniors Joyce Stout, Joyce Schlubatis, Jane Smith and sophomores Diane Hammond and Margaret Thomas. 

Cardinal Marching Band

The Cardinal Marching Band had a very active year sparkling the halftime events at the football games, and participating in several community and state events including the County Fair parade, the St. Joe County Fair, Halloween Parade, Annual Christmas Parade, the parade of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Memorial Day Parade and the judged events of The Tulip Festival in Holland and the Michigan Marching Festival at Benton Harbor where the 1949 Cardinal Marching Band won a Division 1 in both events.  In addition the Concert Band won a Division 2 in the annual Southwestern Michigan Band and Orchestra Festival in Kalamazoo.  There were 16 seniors in the band: Ardith Betts, Dorothy Borden, Joyce Carls, Ronald Corey, Nancy Fair, Barbara Gist, Glyn Dee Havens, Richard Hill, Charles Huntley, Patti Kaser, Imogene Mahaffey, Bob Pearce, Marjorie Raymond, Bob Rubley, Conrad Semmelroth, and Betty Stephenson.   Richard Hill was the Drum Major.  The following seniors participated in the Regional and State Solo Contests: Ron Corey, Conrad Semmelroth, Joyce Carls, Charles Huntley, Glyn Dee Havens, and Richard Hill.  In addition, Ron Corey and Rich Hill were selected to the Michigan All-State Band. Our Band Director was Harland Bond.

Other Activities

Of course, many seniors participated in extracurricular events such as - The Student Commission; Yearbook Staff; Cardinal Chatter; Mirror Newspaper; Senior Play; Y-Teens; Hi-Y; Future Farmers of America; Athletic Police; Ushers; Dancing Class; Chef Class; Senior Trip; Debate Team; Democracy Contest; Spring Oratorical Contest; The Bow Tie Club; The "C" Club; The Girls' Athletic Association; and The Senior High Chorus.
