This foaling I got to experience on my own. Bill was already traveling
between Michigan and Missouri at this time. This was Misty's first foal
and was due May 23, 1997.
Two weeks before her foaling date she still didn't have any milk. My vet
suggested we put her on Equi-Tox which is an oral medication for mares that have
been on fescue grass. By the next day milk production had started.
Now it was just the usual waiting game.
On June 10, I fell asleep watching TV and woke up at 1:00 am. Before
heading off to bed I went to go give one last check. When I peeked into
Misty's stall she wasn't there. She had access to go outside in the arena
so I looked out there and didn't see her either. I turned on the lights
and found her outside in the sand arena giving birth. The head was the
only part out and the little munchkin was already alert but with a nose full of
sand. So I sat down, cleaned out her nose and held her head out of the
sand. It was an easy delivery and everything went well. As soon as
Misty got up and checked out her foal I picked up the baby and brought her
inside. I normally can't lift 100lbs of squirming filly but I did
it. I left mom and daughter to do their thing in a warm straw filled
stall.
Misty wasn't sure about letting this little thing suck, so after an hour of the
filly trying I called my neighbor to come help me hold her. With my
neighbor holding Misty, and me on one side of her, she finally let the filly
have breakfast.

Munchkin is now a 4-H horse and doing very well on the show circuit. |
