My Tribute to our Mares Foaling

          DCP_0005.JPG (195403 bytes)

I think the best part of having horses has been watching the birth of our foals.  It's a very exciting time but can be extremely stressful in difficult moments.  There's so much to know to be prepared in case your mare needs your help.  I definitely recommend that you read as many books on the subject as possible, preferably after your mare is covered, so that you are prepared to give your mare the best care during those long 11 months.

I recommend the book Blessed are the Broodmares by M. Phyllis Lose, V.D.M.

When due dates roll around our lives are completely changed. Bill and I move into the barn, rearrange hay to make a mattress. We come with folding chairs and a table, the cribbage board, sleeping bags, pillows, lots and lots of blankets, cell phone, emergency numbers and most importantly our foal kit.

During the day I make a check every half hour and at night we sleep in the barn. Our daily lives are transformed until the miracle takes place but it's half the fun!

We hope you enjoy these special photos.
