Memo To All Hackert Lake Area Residents
From Your Lake Association President, Bob Haupt
As I See It : Association Accomplishments in 2001
Do you wonder what your $20.00 accomplished in
2001? I'd like to list them for you.
-
Removing the size
limit on Northern Pike to enhance the growth of Northern Pike and the
survival of Walleye fingerlings. This was three years work.
-
Getting 10,000
Walleye fingerlings planted in Hackert Lake.
-
Removing toxic waste
drums from the west end of the lake. This was done thanks to all the
committee members. It was very difficult to do this. Without the help
of the DEQ we would never have been able to pay for this project.
-
Monitoring severe
algae blooms last summer by taking extra water samples.
-
Continuing aquatic
plant and water quality sampling in partnership with WSCC.
Thanks to Dr. Helal, Melissa,
and Eric for their dedicated help with this and the monitoring of algae bloom. Thanks to all the committee
members for their hard work on publicity, picnics, meetings, etc. and to the Vice President, Secretary,
and Treasurer for the nudges I needed.
Where are we headed in 2002?
-
Possible watershed
study, timetable 1-3 years.
-
Possible lake study
with Michigan Lake and Stream Associations.
-
Possible lake and
aquatic plant study with WSCC.
-
Possible planting of
fathead minnows and building simple structure to enhance breeding.
-
Work with DNR and
water patrol and enforcement of water safety regulations (there will
be more next year).
-
Work with DNR to
make changes in parking at the public access area.
-
Considering Gary
Anderson's suggestion to reopen the old Chilberg swim area to all lake
residents. We hope that the Chilberg subdivision will support this
project, as the Lake Association will.
Good News
80% of Eurasian milfoil on the west end of the lake died off from natural causes, 30% in the east end, but it will
come back.
The Hard Part of my Job
One of the questions I ask myself: Without lake monitoring will my grandchildren and great grandchildren
enjoy the lake as much as we have?
The Association will ask for $20.00 in dues from each of you in January. About 52% of lake property owners paid
dues in 2001. Only about 20% of them attended general meetings, potluck and picnic. One of my goals for 2002
is to have dues paying membership up to 90% and meeting attendance up to 80%.
In 2001 all of the property owners received much more than their $20.00 worth.
Any questions or comments on my report and plans or any new ideas will be gladly received. I am willing to
listen and talk to you about them.
Happy Holidays!

Remember the two major things that damage a lake's
health:
-
Lawn fertilizer
-
Leaching septic
systems
