Hindustan 'Hindustan'

My 'Hindustan' began a decline when I first planted it in Fall 1998, and lasted less than two years, even though it was the largest and most expensive rhododendron I have ever purchased. The flower buds opened in the fall both years, ruining most of the remaining flowers. The flowers you see here are from the better of the two trusses I ever got from this plant, and were eaten by inchworms in three days. The following winter, it declined rapidly and died by spring. Luckily, I was able to save some cuttings, and I'll see if I can grow them. I have heard that 'Hindustan' is difficult to flower. 'Hindustan' is the seed parent of 'Capistrano.'

This plant was purchased from Frank's Nursery and Crafts, Fall 1998. Frank's is a good store for finding lots of interesting plants. I have even found some hardy cacti in their indoor plant section. You just have to know what to look for. They have a few gems among the common stuff. Trust me, just look very hard. This story of 'Hindustan' is very atypical of my experiences with Frank's.
