Not to be confused with the ACLU, Always Causing Legal Unrest is an organization dedicated to exposing the sexism inherent in much civil rights activism, most notably that of that other ACLU organization, the American Civil Liberties Union, which has defended the KKK and pornographers while attacking the work of feminist activists like Andrea Dworkin and Nikki Craft. The site is unabashedly militant and even a little disturbing, but it is nonetheless right-on in much of its indictment of many modern "First Amendment" cases.
Hosted by the ACLU (Always Causing Legal Unrest), the Andrea Dworkin web site features her titles Scapegoat and Life & Death and also works to dispel myths about this famous feminist's writings and beliefs.
Though its name may seem to suggest that the Coalition Against Trafficking of Women deals only with the issue of human trafficking, CATW is actually quite comprehensive in its analysis of male violence. CATW has exposed the interconnectedness of violence against women in its various manifestations around the world, maintaining the radical position that all forms of violence against women are based in sexual inequality. Through consultation with the United Nations, CATW campaigns to criminalize sexual exploitation in all of its forms, including for example prostitution, sexual trafficking, rape, and battery. Dr. Donna Hughes of the University of Rhode Island has participated in much of the work of CATW. In fact, she is largely responsible for CATW's web design. Accessible on her web site are many excellent papers and essays on a broad field of topics, ranging from sexual violence in war to sexism in genetics. http://www.uri.edu/artsci/wms/hughes
Dykefeminism is an excellent web site devoted to disseminating positive information about radical lesbian feminism and lesbian separatism. Available on Dykefeminism is a listserv for lesbian separatists only. Feminist.com
Feminist.com is a well-established site that boasts thorough resources and articulate commentaries on various feminist issues. Unfortunately, some of its contents are better than others; for example, Betty Friedan's speech that feminism has become "divisionary" and "man-hating" is sadly apologetic and disappointing. However, Feminist.com does feature an excellent columnist (Ask Amy), as well as an impressive catalogue of women-owned businesses and feminist services in an easy-to-access and easy-to-read set-up. The Guerrilla Girls are a radical group of artists who call themselves "the conscience of the art world." They mount public awareness campaigns against sexism and racism in art galleries and in larger society by delivering public addresses and by proliferating political art and informative posters in movie theaters, universities, and other public venues. They have also authored an informative and entertaining book on the treatment of women in the art world through the ages. For research purposes and to protect their anonymity, the Guerrilla Girls travel in disguise and adopt pseudonyms of dead women artists. To find out more about this crafty, high-profile, and humourous group (yes, even feminists can be fun!), click above.
OneAngryGirl is a fabulously fun and terribly cheeky anti-pornography site with cute activist t-shirts and smart feminist rants about pornography. OneAngryGirl also includes examples of well-selected (but disturbing) pornographic comics to illustrate the ways that humour normalizes male sexual violence in pornography.
