Ann Arbor Dueling Society
Written and researched by Matthew Rhys Sypniewski, B.A, M.A.

Recently I have been taking classes, at the Summit in Canton, Michigan, for electric competitions. This fencing group is affliated with the Ann Arbor Dueling Society. I began fencing there in February 2003. I also fence at the Salle de'Troit.

I attended Ann Arbor Dueling Society's tournament on Saturday, August 28, 2004, with my instructor and classmates. Before this I was attending the Summit Classes to get another fencing experience and get instructions from a different instructor, Michael Rappaport. Two points of view are always better than one. Now I help him with instruction.

I also fence in the Schoolcraft Fencing Club at Schoolcraft College under the instruction of Doug McLaren. In fact, I saw Doug at the Highland Festival Weekend at the Michigan Renaissance Festival in Holly, Michigan. I have been attending this Renaissance Festival since it's third year. This year was the twenty-fifth (25th), so I have been going there for 22 years.

So I guess you could say that I am a dyed-in-the-cloth Renaissance and fencing fan. I only began fencing recently, but have wanted to do so years ago. My studies and teaching have prohibited that until recently. I needed a club with an easy driving time, and now I have two.
