The following is a collection of photos of our Faithful, Intrepid Author as she makes headlines or personal appearances...
IN THE NEWS SOURCE: CNN It's the calm before the storm. Rowling appears on Cable News Network (CNN) in the USA in fall 1999, about eight months before the real Harry Potter frenzy begins in summer 2000. The Prisoner of Azkaban has just been released in America, and she's on tour to promote it. |
DANKE, DEUTSCHLAND ("THANKS, GERMANY!") Rowling was doing publicity in Germany, as shown in this undated photo (probably 1999, because there is no Goblet of Fire in her hands), and these are clearly German covers. |
BACK TO UNIVERSITY SOURCE: India Times/Reuters Rowling went back to University -- that's how the British say it, leaving out the "the." She returned to the University of Exeter, where she earned her degree in French and the classics, in July 2000 to receive an honorary doctorate. Doesn't she look professorial here? |
SINGLE MUMS' ADVOCATE SOURCE: Council on Single Parent Familes; The Sun newspaper. Rowling knows what it's like to be a single mother. She remembers that when she first returned to Scotland after her divorce in 1993, then Prime Minister John Major blamed single "mums" as the cause of society's breakdown in the UK. She became the main supporter of the Council on Single Parent Families, donating £500,000 to the organization. |
A VISIT WITH HER MAJESTY In early 2001, Rowling met with Queen Elizabeth II at the offices of Bloomsbury Publishing, the first company to put out her books. The queen had made Rowling an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for her contributions to English literature (see also photo at right). Her Majesty and the author seem to be hitting it off. |
EVERYTHING'S IN 'ORDER' SOURCE: The Associated Press Here Rowling shows off the Order of the British Empire medal she received from Prince Charles, the son of Queen Elizabeth II, in early March 2001. And, just in case we forget who J.K. Rowling is, she reminds us by holding a copy of The Philosopher's Stone. |
STORYTIME Rowling likes to meet her fans, most of whom are children (though there are many adults, too!). Here she spends some time chatting with and reading to some of them. Note the lightning bolts on several of the young fans' heads. |
ALL ABOARD FOR PUBLICITY SOURCE: The New York Times An old-time train was temporarily converted into the Hogwarts Express and became a publicity machine on wheels in August 2000 as Rowling promoted The Goblet of Fire. |
A 'CUPPA JOE' AND AN INTERVIEW, TOO SOURCE: The Washington Post Rowling discusses her books and her life with The Washington Post newspaper in the USA. Perhaps it's like old times again, drinking the coffee, just as she used to sip espressos at Nicolson's in Edinburgh as she wrote The Sorcerer's Stone. |
IT'S MAGIC SOURCE: People Magazine In 1999, People named J.K. Rowling one of its most intriguing people. This wizard-like picture of Rowling, posing with a fake tree and owl, appeared with their article. |
WITCHY WOMAN SOURCE: Time Rowling was a finalist for 2000 in Time magazine's Person of the Year honor (the winner was President George W. Bush. The magazine wrote: "Three and a half years ago, no one on earth had heard of Harry Potter ... And now? Four Harry Potter novels and 76 million copies sold worldwide later, Rowling is earning between $30 and $40 million a year and riding a publishing phenomenon that has silenced dire predictions of the death of the printed word." |
AUTHOR, AUTHOR SOURCE: Inside.com Rowling with fellow writer Judy Blume (Wifey, Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret) at a Scholastic Books party in her honor, in New York in October 2000. |
