The greatest photo preview of The Sorcerer’s Stone yet was in the October 2001 issue of Vanity Fair (a USA magazine). Annie Leibovitz, one of the best known and talented photographers of our time, made extensive visits to the UK movie to take shots of the actors in costume, and the sets. The result was 22 pages of photos that HP fans won’t be able to resist. Leibovitz is renowned as a celebrity and portrait photographer.
She was born in Westport, Connecticut, in 1949. As a 20-year-old, Leibovitz lived at an kibbutz, or large collective farm, in Israel and assisted in an archaeological dig at the site of King Solomon’s Temple. She received a fine arts degree from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1971.
Leibovitz began her career in 1970, when she sold photos to Rolling Stone. Three years later, she became the magazine’s chief photographer, a post she retained until 1983. During 1975 she was the photographer for the Rolling Stones (the rock group).
One of her best-known celeb pictures was John Lennon and wife Yoko Ono embracing, shot just hours before a crazed fan murdered him in 1980.
Leibovitz has been a contributing photographer to Vanity Fair since 1983. She also has operated the Annie Leibovitz Photo Studio in New York City since the early 1990s.
Leibovitz has shot pictures of movie stars, politicians and everyday people, often composing her images with thought to the individual’s public persona.
Leibovitz’s projects have included a “coffee table” book of athletes training and preparing for the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics and Women (1999), a portrait book on her fellow females from all walks of life. Her awards include Best Photograph and Photographer of the Year from the American Society of Magazine Photographers and Infinity Photographer of the Year from the International Center of Photography. Exhibitions of her works have been staged at the Sidney Janis Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.
Photos from the spread are now on this site. These are my own scans; I did NOT take them from any other site. Please excuse any lines in the centers of the pictures or color differences. I had to scan each photo half and then reassemble them in Paint Shop Pro. I wanted to provide the entire photo joined together, not in halves.
Follow the link at the bottom of the page to see the rest. Below is the cover, with actor Daniel Radcliffe as Harry, aloft on a broomstick, and the Slytherin vs. Gryffindor house rivalry.
Vanity Fair's October issue was released 5 September 2001 in New York City, and across the rest of the U.S. on 11 September. It will available for most of the month, so get your copy for $3.95 U.S.!
![]() It's a Slytherin vs. Gryffindor faceoff in the Great Hall. Slytherin BMOC (big man on campus) Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) is protected by his bulky bodyguards Vincent Crabbe (Jamie Waylett) and Gregory Goyle (Joshua Herdman). Gryffindor is well represented by Hermione Granger (Emma Watson), Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) and Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint). Ron has a rather goofy look on his face. |
