HARRY POTTER TOYS & GAMES, PART 7: PUZZLES

Mattel, Inc. and University Games both received licenses to make Harry Potter jigsaw puzzles. Paintings by Fred Bode, Warner Bros. artist for The Sorcerer's Stone, have been made into puzzles with anywhere from 250 to 550 pieces. Hallmark Cards, Inc. also has gotten into the "puzzle wars" in a minor way.

MATTEL

Mattel's plain puzzles -- just jigsaw pieces and no other gimmicks -- have been in two series. Series 2 ones have 350 pieces and are Hogsmeade, Hogwarts, Hagrid's Ride and Harry and Firenze the centaur in the Forbidden Forest. Suggested retail is $7.95.

The "mystery" puzzles are aimed at family builders. They have 180 pieces for adults, and 80 larger pieces for kids. There also is a decoder to find hidden clue images in the completed puzzle. Titles in the series are "Journey to Hogwarts" in the rowboats (260 pieces); Fluffy/Forbidden Corridor (300 pieces); Potions Class (260 pieces); Gryffindor Common Room Entrance (300 pieces); and "Gringotts Wild Ride" (300 pieces). Suggested retail is $9.99.

Mattel also offers puzzles for kids on the go, with its 56-piece, two-sided mini puzzles. The "Flying Series" of six puzzles features a lot of broomstick action. They are the Chamber of Keys, Quidditch, Ron Flying, Chasing the Snitch, Harry the Seeker and Hermione Flying. Suggested retail is $1.99.

UNIVERSITY GAMES

University Games' 250-piece "glow puzzles" have portions that have been treated with luminous chemicals so that hidden images appears when the lights are turned off. Fred Bode paintings also are used. Puzzles in this series are Quidditch/Golden Snitch Capture, Mirror of Erised, and "Hermione Granger and the Sorting Hat." Suggested retail is $9.99.

HALLMARK

The greeting card company offers an aerial view of a Quidditch match with reusable stickers that can be placed wherever you want on the completed puzzle. Make Gryffindor beat the pants off Slytherin, as one team is in red robes, and the other is in green. Suggested retail, $14.95.
