GUND PLUSH SERIES

Gund, Inc., of Edison, New Jersey, USA, is a major manufacturer of everyday and collectible stuffed toys. It received a license from Warner Bros. to create plushes of characters from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. The result was two human and six animal figures. They are excellently detailed, and many are quite cute.

Hagrid's suggested retail is $48, but I've seen him for just $24.99 at Blockbuster Video. Harry and Ron's suggested prices are $28. The Harry plush bears a strong resemblance to actor Daniel Radcliffe. Like many of the other toys and licensed products, the plushes provided a preview of movie wardrobes and character appearances.

Ron Plush was released in early fall 2001 and has a friendly, open face and red hair.

Hagrid is a happy, gentle giant, wearing a scarf in the Gryffindor house colors (he was sorted there) and a big overcoat.

The Harry Potter menagerie is presented below. These are the popular animals of the movie, strongly stressed in most of the other products.

Gund also released a line of five beanies similar to the popular Harry Potter critters above. They had a suggested retail of $4.99.

VIVID IMAGINATIONS

To compare to the Gund figures presented above, here are the plushes produced for the United Kingdom market by Vivid Imaginations, a leading toymaker in the country. Vivid is based in Haslemere, County of Surrey, England. Its licenses include Spider-Man, Tomb Raider and X-Men. Their Hagrid looks a lot angrier than Gund's. Cost for each plush is £14.99 ($21 US).

WARNERS SNITCH BEANIE

Warner Bros. itself has distributed items manufactured under license and bearing its brand name. This Golden Snitch beanie is one example: it was offered in the Studio Stores and had a suggested retail of $12.95. It is made of shiny gold fabric with white, iridescent wings. It's about 3 1/2 inches in diameter, with a wingspan of 5 1/2 inches.
