HARRY POTTER TOYS & GAMES, PART 22:
MATTEL'S 2002 SORCERER'S STONE PRODUCTS

While already producing a number of Chamber of Secrets products, Mattel in 2002 also put out a second wave of brand-new Sorcerer's Stone items! This may have been a tie-in with the VHS and DVD releases of the movie, or just a way to keep an interest in Harry Potter products going. This page presents this "second wave" (except Diagon Alley Game).
Dicers start set The most interesting game presented is the Harry Potter "Dicers" set. Dicers is "a game of fantastic creatures and rolling magic," according to Mattel. This is both a strategy game and a collectibles series. The starter set (right) contains six dice, each of which is a clear plastic cube encasing an HP character. This start set contains Hagrid, Harry, Hermione, the Sorting Hat, Professor Snape and Draco Malfoy. The set is $11.99. The object of the game is to challenge other players in wizard competitions. Rolls of these dice represent different characters' powers. The collector/player then can acquire more "Booster" dice, sold individually. There will be a total of 54 Dicers, each priced at $2-$3. More of the character dice are shown below.

Harry Potter movie chess set

At the American International Toy Fair, February 2002, Mattel presented this exact replica of the life-sized chess challenge shown in The Sorcerer's Stone movie (one of the traps protecting the Stone). The pieces are just as they are on film -- only in miniature so fans can play matches of chess themselves. No pricing available yet. The second photo below shows a closeup of the chess pieces. closeup of movie chess set pieces

This Diagon Alley board game equips you with knuts, sickles and galleons and sends you out on a shopping race among the magical stores to fill up your trunk. Floo Powder is available to travel fast (but avoid Knockturn Alley) and Spell cards can block other players. First person to return to the Leaky Cauldron with full trunk wins. This IS a Chamber of Secrets toy (the Mattel "II" book appears on the game box). About $15-$20. Diagon Alley board game

The "Chapter Games" shown below are travel sets whose pieces and other equipment come in a snap-shut board shaped like a book. Each reenacts an activity from The Sorcerer's Stone -- shopping at Diagon Alley (again!) and protecting the Stone. About $10 each.
