HARRY POTTER TOYS & GAMES PART 12: DOLLS

Many of the Sorcerer's Stone products on the market are not specifically for girls or boys, such as puzzles, the Uno game or the HP Trading Card Game. This page highlights something for the girls -- collector dolls.

The following dolls are from Mattel, Inc. The company is a doll expert -- Barbie has been their star since 1959. These are some of the nicest depictions of Harry Potter characters yet, better than Fred Bode's bucktoothed Harry in the Warner Bros. artwork.

The dolls are definitely a movie-related product. Their wardrobe is based upon the creations of Sorcerer's Stone movie costume designer Judianna Makovsky. They wear the gray uniforms with house colors on the tie and ribbing of their sweaters. The black robes also are similar.
Harry, Ron and Hermione Hero Dolls The Hero Dolls feature Ron, Harry and Hermione in their Hogwarts uniforms and robes, along with wand and Sorcerer's Stone props. When the stone is rubbed on their robes, a school crest appears. Depending on the store, cost is $10-$20.

The Magical Powers Dolls spotlight Harry and Hermione. They have magnetic hands, and their props also have magnets that allow them to be manipulated so they appear to be doing "magic." Suggested retail is about $20 each.

Harry is in his Quidditch uniform, minus the red Gryffindor robe. He has the Mirror of Erised, which changes to show a photo of Geraldine Somerville and Adrian Rawlins, who play James and Lily Potter. Harry also has the Sorting Hat, Quidditch uniform equipment, loyal Hedwig, a Golden Snitch, and his trusty Nimbus 2000. Harry can make his broom and the Snitch move, and Hedwig's wings flap.

Hermione has her trunk full of magic equipment and books -- the trunk has been promoted in other HP products as well. She also has a cauldron and potions, representing her exceptional skill for Snape's class. One example of the tricks she can do is raise her trunk's lid. While her Crookshanks doesn't enter the picture until The Prisoner of Azkaban, someone decided that Mrs. Norris should accompany Hermione in this set!

Mattel Message Owl and Gryffindor Buddies
GRYFFINDOR FRIENDS

I spotted these Mattel soft-sculpture rag dolls at my local discount supermarket-department store. The Gryffindor Friends consist of Harry, Hermione, Ron and Hedwig. They were about $10-$12. At the far left is the Mattel Message Owl. There are four owls, in different colors, including pink/purple and yellow, and each bird has a secret message scroll attached to its feet. I don't know what the messages are -- you'd have to buy the birds to know. Retail is $4.99.

CHAMBER OF SECRETS DOLLS

The Harry Potter sequel led to new dolls for 2002. The first series Mattel introduced are these "Wizard Sweets" ones. The dolls themselves are duplicates of the ones sold in 2001, but with costuming in Muggle garments. Each doll also comes with a specific HP candy with package design drawn from the movies: Hermione has Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans (with the British spelling), and Harry has Chocolate Frogs. Each doll also comes with a bracelet for the owner to wear, complete with scent like the enclosed candy! Therefore, Harry has a chocolate bracelet by him, and Hermione has a strawberry-scented one. Cost is about $10.
