A 20th century comedian-actor named Jimmy Durante frequently used to say, "Everyone wants to get into the act!" That seems to be true among Harry Potter collectibles makers, because Mattel, Inc. was not content just to produce toys. It also has created two plastic figurine lines: The affordable "Classic Scenes" trio, and several costly, highly-detailed, hand-painted figures, also showing major movie/book scenes. The Classic Scenes figurines are about $25 each.

For these upscale collector's figurines, Mattel turned to The Four Horsemen, a New Jersey-based quartet of action figure designers and sculptors who broke away from McFarlane Toys and set up their own company. Mattel signed an agreement for their services in spring 2000. The four sculptures below are the fruits of their Harry Potter-based labor. They are very good in their details and physical design of the people and creatures, far better than the Warner Bros. artwork. However, with prices like these, why are these figurines still made of plastic?
