Short Direct Quote

A source with an author

How to do it:
1 Enclose the words in double quotation marks.

2 Enclose a SINGLE WORD in parentheses.  This should be the author's last name; if the author is unknown, use the first important word in the title .

3 Don't use the word "page" or "p" or use a comma within the parentheses.

4 Place the period AFTER the final parenthesis.

Method 1: Source given in text

(must be used the first time a source is used--optional after that)

Roger Smith, who is a medical researcher, reported in the July 1998 issue of Medicine, that "the placebo effect disappeared when behaviors were studied in this manner" (276).

Method 2: Source in Parentheses

He stated, "The placebo effect disappeared when behaviors were studied in this manner" (Smith  276), but he did not clarify which behaviors were studied.
