After she left the battlefront, she returned home to heal. 

d) A participle phrase cannot stand by itself; it needs a sentence to support. 

Running as hard as she could.

(What happened as she was running?)  

Running as hard as she could, she suddenly collapsed. 

e) An appositive cannot stand by itself; it needs a sentence to support. 

A boy who loved dogs.

(What about the boy who loved dogs?)

Two girls who were friends. 

(What about he girls who were friends?)
