We all know that surnames, or family names, did not exist in Bible times, but it comes as
something of a surprise to most of us when we learn that for a thousand years after the birth of
Christ, surnames were still almost unheard-of.  When William the Conqueror established
himself in England, even the nobles did not have surnames -- in fact, family names were not
common among the nobility until the thirteenth century, and were not generally adopted by the
lower classes until the sixteenth century.

The first to use surnames in England were the great land-owners, the noblemen, who took as
their surnames the names of their estates.  Thus a man named Richard might own an estate
called Cotgrove, and in order to distinguish him from a neighbor also named Richard, his
friends referred to him as Richard de Cotgove (“de” being French for “of”).  Sons usually
inherited the estate, and in a sense he also inherited his father’s family name.  Eventually the
preposition was dropped, and a true family name developed, which, unlike an estate, could be
inherited by all the children.  These are called “place names”.

Only a small number of the inhabitants of England, however, owned land, and as it became
desirable, for one reason or another, to have a surname, some source, other than the name of
property, was necessary for the great majority of Englishmen.  For many, a name was supplied
by asking, What does he do? This is the origin of the thousand of so called “occupational
names”, such as Smith, Farmer, Cartwright, Arrowsmith, Shoemaker and Sherman (one who
shears woolen cloth).

Another question which might be asked was, Who is his father?  If the answer were Richard,
he would be called Richard’s son which is the origin of the name Richardson.  In other cases
the “son” would not become part of the name, but the possessive “s” would remain, and the
result was Richard’s.

A fourth source of surnames was the answer to the question, What does he look like?, or What
is his most prominent peculiarity?  Thus originated such names as Short, Long, Big and
Small.  In assigning nicknames as Shorty, Tiny, Red and Gabby.  Nicknames are derived,
however, from many sources other than physical characteristics, and writers on the origin of
surnames are careful to point out that in dealing with a surname which has derived from a
nickname, we can never know for sure just why the nickname was applied in the first place.
Such is the problem we face when we attempt to account for the name SPARKS, because the
surname Sparks did begin as a nickname.
 

Authorities are agreed that the name Sparks has derived from the name Sparrowhawk as a
nickname which was used in England long before the coming of William the Conqueror.  It is
not believed, however, that the name Sparrowhawk became a family name until the 13th
century.  The earliest person on record who was called Sparrowhawk was an Anglo-Saxon
monk of St. Edmundsbury, who became Abbot in Abingdon in the year 1048.  The story of
how Spearhafoc (as the name was spelled in Anglo-Saxon) was given the bishopric of London
by Edward the Confessor in 1050, but was never consecrated because of the opposition of the
Pope and the Archbishop of Canterbury, is found in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle.

In the Doomsday Book (the record of a great survey of the lands of England made between
1085 and 1086 by order of William the Conqueror) the names Sparhauoc and Sperhavoc (both
intended for Sparrowhawk) appear among the landowners who had possessed land at the time
of Edward the Confessor.

The sparrow hawk has been a common bird in England for many centuries.  Probably dozens
of other persons were also nicknamed Sparrowhawk, of whom no record has survived.  The
sparrow hawk is really a small falcon, eleven to twelve inches long, and was used extensively
in the ancient sport of falconry, where hawks were trained to attack other birds and carry them
back to their masters.  It is described in the Encyclopedia Americana as a very bold and active
bird, and not infrequently may be seen to attack other and larger birds of prey, its courage
extending even to recklessness, while it is also shy and wary.

In 1538, Henry the VIII, King of England, decreed that each head of a family acquire a
surname for himself and his family (providing that he did not already have one -- and the vast
majority of the populace were without a family name), and that all births, marriages and
deaths be recorded in the parish register.  Thus it happened that, some four hundred years ago,
an Englishman nicknamed Sparrowhawk, handed his name down to his sons, and our family
name became firmly established.  Due to the popularity of the sparrow hawk, there no doubt
were several men in England in the 16th Century with the name, or nickname, of
Sparrowhawk who assumed it as their family name.  Therefore, persons today with the name
Sparrowhawk, or Sparks, do not all descend from one particular ancestor of the name, but
from several, who were widely scattered over England, and unrelated.

It would be extremely interesting if we could know exactly who our own remote ancestor was
who established the name as our family name.  We should like to know why his neighbors
called him Sparrowhawk--was he bold and active like the bird, or was he just the opposite,
and people called him Sparrowhawk to make fun of him?  Or did some comic suggest that he
actually resembled a sparrow hawk because of a
 

hooked nose or protruding eyes?  Or was he fond of the sport of falconry possessing a large
number of sparrow hawks for that purpose?  Or did he operate an inn which had a picture of a
sparrow hawk on its sign, and was known as Sparrow-hawk’s Inn? These questions must
remain forever unanswered.

Knowing that the remote originator of the name Sparks was named Sparrowhawk, the
question naturally arises, How and why did the name change?  Elsdon C. Smith in The Story
of Our Names states:  “Ever since surnames first became part of man’s full name, they have
been changed, corrupted and multiplied almost beyond number by bringing to bear up on them
many diverse influences”.  One of the chief causes of the corruption of surnames, according to
Smith, is lingual abbreviations and the example which he uses is Spark for Sparrowhawk.  In
other words, there is a tendency to shorten a name to make it easier and quicker to pronounce.
In shortening Sparrowhawk, the first tendency was to eliminate the second syllable, and
change the name to Sparhawk.  In fact, this lingual abbreviation probably took place in some
cases while the name was still just a nickname.  In order to shorten the name still further, the
tendency was to eliminate the “haw” sound, and the result was Spark. Both of these changes
came very early in the evolution of the name, for in the Hundred Rolls of 1273 there was a
Thomas Sperheuk in Lincolnshire and a Nicholas Sparke in Norfolk.  It is also important to
note that everyone named Sparrowhawk did not end up with Spark.  A few families retained
the full, original spelling, and the name Sparhawk is common enough to be found in nearly
any large city directory today.

During the 14th century the name Spark became more and more common as a surname.  The
records for this period are so meager, of course, that it is virtually impossible to trace the
relationships which probably existed between many of these families.  A John Spark, of
Berwick-on-Tweed, appears to have been rather prominent during the reign of Edward I.  In
the Patent Rolls there is a record dated July 6, 1292 which names this John Spark as “going
beyond seas on the King’s affairs” and on August 13, 1302 he was appointed one of the
“collectors and receivers in the port of Berwick-on-Tweed of the new custom of 2 sea tun....on
all wines brought within the realm”.  The earliest reference to a Spark in the Patent Rolls is
dated August 17, 1279 on which date pardon was issued at Geddington by Edward I “to
Humphrey de Cheselade, in Evelcestre gaal for the death of Adam Spark”.

The last change which took place in the name was the addition of the letter “s” This change,
according to most authorities, came about as the result of adding the possessive, that is
Spark’s, when a son was identified by using his father’s name.  When a baptismal record was
made it was customary to enter the father’s name as well as that of the child, and it might
read, “John, son of Richard Spark’s”.
 
 

The  same boy might be identified in the community as “Spark’s son”.  In some names the
word “son” became a part of the name, as in the case of Wilcockson, while in others only the
possessive “s” was tacked on, as happened in the case of Sparks.  The question immediately
arises as to why all surnames do not end in “s”.  One reason is that, though the genitive case
ending of “s” came into official use in English in the 13th century, many years passed before it
became common in colloquial speech.  Why one name acquired it and another did not, can
seldom be determined.  Perhaps in some cases it simply sounded better and was easier to
pronounce.  In any case, many of the families named Spark gradually changed to Sparks.  This
final change seems to have occurred largely during the 16th Century, and by 1600 there were
about as many persons named Sparks in England as were named Spark.

From the earliest settlement in America, we find persons bearing this name which had derived
from Sparrowhawk.  It is interesting, however, that in nearly all instances, the form of the
name found in this country has been Sparks, so that today for everyone named Spark there are
about one hundred named Sparks.  In England, however, one form is nearly as common as the
other.  Guppy in his The Homes of Family Names in Great Britain, published 1890, (pg 552),
states that in Susex there were 14 persons named Spark(e)s per 10,000 population); 7 in
Devonshire; and 9 in Somersetshire.  According to the 1790 Census of the United States, the
ratio here was approximately 2 Sparks per 10,000 population.  If the same ratio exists today,
there are at the present time over 30,000 men, women and children in the United States with
the surname of Sparks.
 

  1.  Eli1 Sparks was born Kentucky 1799.
 He married Rebecca C. Fulton in Coshocton Co, Ohio, 3 September 1818.  Rebecca was born in Ohio.
 He married Mary Krider in Guernsey Co, Ohio, 31 July 1838.  Mary was born in Pa. 1813.

      Eli Sparks and Rebecca C.  Fulton had the following children:

 George M. Sparks made a declaration for an Invalid Pension on March 16, 1868, when he appeared before the clerk of the Edgar County, Illinois, Court.  He was aged 32 and a resident of Kansas, Illinois. was aged 32 and a resident of Kansas, Illinois.  He stated that he had enlisted on August 9, 1861, as a private in Company H (commanded by Capt. Huston Taylor) of the 59th Regiment Illinois Infantry and had served until he was dis- charged at Springfield, Illinois, on October 4, 1864.  He said that while engaged as a picket in front of the enemy at Kenesaw Mountain, Georgia, on June 27, 1864, he had been wounded in the right arm above the elbow by a bullet which damaged the nerves in his arm and hand.  He was now unable to do anything except light labor in his occupation as a farmer.  He appointed William A. Foulkes of Paris, Illinois, as his attorney, and the declaration was witnessed by A. J. Baker and John McAdams.

              The Adjutant Generalls Office confirmed the military service of George M. Sparks on June 12, 1868.  He had been enrolled at Kansas, Illinois, on August 9, 1861,as a corporal in Company H, 59th Regiment Illinois Volunteers to serve for three years.  He had been a sergeant when he had been wounded and sent to the hospital on June 22, 1864.  He was discharged at Springfield, Illinois, on October 4,  1864.

              Invalid Certificate No. 103,985 was issued to George M. Sparks, and he was placed upon the pension roll.

              On June 5, 1898, Sparks responded to a questionnaire from the Bureau of Pensions.  He stated that he had been married to Sarah J. Oar on April 17, 1866,  in Edgar County, Illinois, by Samuel B. Taggart, a Presbyterian minister.  It had been the first marriage for both.  They had nine children, but only six of them were still living [in 1898].  They were:

                        Carl W. Sparks, born March 12, 1875
                        Ruth E. Sparks, born June 10, 1882
                        Mary Sparks, born December 26, 1883

              George M. Sparks applied for an increase in his pension benefits on February 26,
1906.  He was receiving a pension of $10.00 per month, but he believed he deserved more because of his age.  He had been born on February 13, 1834.  Jacob V. Rogers and Ed Buckler witnessed his signature.  Apparently, the request was not acted upon with favor.

              Sparks applied again for increased pension benefits on March 4, 1907, under the
provisions of the 1907 Act of Congress.  He said he was now 73 years of age and a resident of Hume, Illinois.  When he entered the army, he had been 5 feet and 8 inches tall; he had a fair complexion, blue eyes and dark hair; and he was a farmer.  He had been born on February 13, 1834, in Coshocton County, Ohio. Since leaving the service, he had lived at Kansas, Illinois, until 1873, and then he had moved to Hume, Illinois, where he had lived since.  William H. Stark and W. S. Linder attested the declaration, and Edwin L. Writesman and John E. Wilson witnessed his signature.. Again, the request of George M. Sparks was apparently denied.

              On March 22, 1909, George M. Sparks sent the Bureau of Pensions a true copy
of the record of the births of his father's family which had been taken from a family Bible in the possession of a sister.  The record showed Sparks's date of birth as February 13, 1834.  Apparently he was given an increase in his pension at this time because of his age.

              George M. Sparks responded to a second questionnaire from the Bureau of Pen-
sions on March 13, 1915.  He re-affirmed most of the information he had furnished earlier about his marriage to Sarah J. Oar and of their family.  He gave the names and dates of birth of all of their nine children, including three he had not named in 1898 because they had died before then.  These three were:

                        Adah Sparks, born March 31, 1867
                        Bertha E. Sparks, born October 30, 1878
                        Frankie Sparks, born March 1, 1880

            When George M. Sparks died on July 21, 1920, at Hume, Illinois, he was receiving a pension of $50.00 per month.  According to information on his Certificate of
Death, which was given by Etta McCracken of Pawnee City, Nebraska, he had been born on February 13, 1834, to Eli and Mary (Fuller) Sparks, both natives of Ohio.  His full name was George Mitchell Sparks.  The cause of his death was jaundice and old age.  He was buried in the Young-America Cemetery at Hume.

            On August 4, 1920, Sarah J. Sparks applied for a Widow's Pension.  She stated
that she had been born on February 16, 1844, at McConnellsville, Ohio.  She had been married to George M. Sparks on April 17, 1866.  He had died on July 21, 1920.  She applied for a pension under the provisions of the 1920 Act of Congress.  J. V. Rogers and Frank K. Page witnessed her signature.

            On November 3, 1920, Charles H. McAdams, aged 68, and Susan C. Markle., aged 70, both residents of Hume, Illinois, swore that they had known both Sarah J. Sparks and her late husband, George M. Sparks, before they had been married on April 17, 1866, and they knew that they had lived together as man and wife until the death of George M. Sparks, on July 21, 1920.

            On April 14, 1921, George D. Murphy, Clerk of the Edgar County [Illinois] Court, sent the Bureau of Pensions a record of the marriage of George M. Sparks and
Sarah J. Oar.  They had been married on April 17, 1866, by Samuel B. Taggert,  M. G.

            Widow's Certificate No. 902,531 was issued to Sarah J. Sparks, and she was
placed on the pension roll.  When she died on October 14, 1933, she was receiving a pension of $36.00 per month.

            [Editor's Note: According to information given on the 1850 census of Greene County, Indiana, Eli Sparks, father of George M. Sparks, was born about 1798 in Kentucky.  He was married to Rebecca Fulton on September 3, 1818, in Coshocton County, Ohio, and when the 1820 census was taken of that county, they had two children.  sometime between 1820 and 1830, Eli moved to Guernsey County, Ohio, where he was the head of his family in 1830 and 1840.  Rebecca apparently died about 1835, and on July 31, 1838, Eli was married (second) to Mary Krider. [Note that on the death certificate of George M. Sparks, his mother's name was given as Mary Fuller--perhaps there was confusion regarding Mary's maiden name and that of ER's first wife, Rebecca Fulton.] By 1845, Eli Sparks had moved his family to Greene County, Indiana.

            From census records and information furnished by a descendant, it appears likely
that Eli Sparks was the father of ten children.  he two oldest (daughters) have not been identified.  The other eight were named John, Isabella, Charles, Hester, George M., Martha, Charlotte, David, and James.

Pat’s note:  Isabella and Hester may have been the older daughters, also Sarah was not listed in this article, but we know that Sarah and John both married a brother and a sister from the Lambird family.

 He married Lodecka Elizabeth (Isabell) Lambert|Lambird.  Lodecka was born in Ind 4 September 1832.  She was the daughter of Watson Lambert|Lambird and  Nancy H..  Lodecka died 22 November 1892 at 60 years of age.
 John died 23 March 1886 in Jasper Co, Ill, Muddy Twp, at 60 years of age.  His body was interred 25 March 1886 in Trexler Cemetary, Jasper Co. Ill.

      John Sparks and Lodecka Elizabeth (Isabell) Lambert|Lambird had the following children:

    She married Nelson Kincaid.

 He married Anne Rupell in Greene Co, Indiana, 10 May 1849.  Anne was born in Indiana 1827.

      Charles Sparks and Anne Rupell had the following children:

      24  ii.  Mary Sparks was born in Greene Co, Indiana 1850.
      25  iii.  James Sparks was born in Greene Co, Indiana 14 March 1852.  His body was interred in Tulip Cemetery, Greene Co, Indiana.
    He married Jane Workman in Greene Co, Indiana, 13 September 1877.  Jane was born in Greene Co, Indiana 25 1855.  She was the daughter of Jeremiah Workman and Cynthia Chipman.  Her body was interred in Greene Co, Indiana, Tulip Cemetery.  Jane died 30 January 1904 in Greene Co, Indiana.
    James died 22 December 1927 in Greene Co, Indiana, at 75 years of age.
      26  iv.  Rebecca A. Sparks was born 1852.
    She married Elias Abrams in Greene Co, Indiana, 25 April 1874.

 She married Nathan Lambert|Lambird in Indania.  Nathan was born in Ind 26 April 1831.  He was the son of Watson Lambert|Lambird and  Nancy H..  Nathan died 6 January 1916 at 84 years of age.
 Sarah died 9 July 1911 in Bogota, Jasper Co, Ill, at 79 years of age.  Her body was interred 10 July 1911 in Tate Cematary, Jasper Co, Ill.

      Sarah Sparks and Nathan Lambert|Lambird had the following children:

 He married Sarah J. Oar Edgar Co, Illinois, 17 April 1866.  Sarah was born McConnellsville, Ohio 16 Feb 1844.  Sarah died 14 Oct 1933 in Illinois, at 89 years of age.
 George died 21 July 1920 Hume, Ill., at 86 years of age.

      George Mitchell Sparks and Sarah J. Oar had the following children:

 He married Sarah Foster Owens.  She is the daughter of Lewis Owens and Sarah Foster.
 Edon died 1925 at 73 years of age.

      Edon Sparks and Sarah Foster Owens had the following children:

      46  ii.  Arvila N Sparks was born in Ill November 1881.

  15.  Martha Jane3 Sparks (John2, Eli1) was born in Illinois 5 April 1856.
 She married Sanford Butler Gambriel Indiana (?), 24 Feb 1874.  Sanford was born in Indiana 31 Aug 1852.  Sanford died 10 Jan 1916 Benton Franklin, Illinois, at 63 years of age.
 Martha died 28 Dec 1939 Benton Franklin, Illinois, at 83 years of age.

      Martha Jane Sparks and Sanford Butler Gambriel had the following children:

    Sarah died 4 April 1963 Chicago, Cook Co, Illinois, at 79 years of age.
      51  iv.  Harriet E. Gambriel was born in Illinois 16 Jan 1887.
      52  v.  Robert Gambriel was born in Illinois 1890.
      53  vi.  John D. Gambriel was born in Illinois 24 Mar 1893.  John died Jyl 1985 Benton, Franklin Co, Illinois, at 92 years of age.

  16.  John Watson3 Sparks (John2, Eli1) was born in Jasper Co, Ill 5 December 1857.
 He married Lucy Jane Carter.  Lucy was born 8 June 1861.  Lucy died July 1933 in Olney Sanitarium, Olney, Ill., at 72 years of age.
 John died 3 March 1945 in North Muddy Township, at 87 years of age.  His body was interred 5 March 1945 in Trexler Cemetary, Jasper Co. Ill.

      John Watson Sparks and Lucy Jane Carter had the following children:

    +  56  i.  James Henry4 Sparks was born 29 June 1879.
    +  57  ii.  Oscar Adolph Sparks was born 20 September 1882.
      58  iii.  Watson Cleveland Sparks was born in Jasper Co. Ill 30 May 1884.  Watson died 4 January 1955 in Alton State Hospital, at 70 years of age.  His body was interred 7 January 1955 in Wood River Township, Madison Co. Ill.
    +  59  iv.  Clyde Eli Sparks was born 4 June 1886.
